1. Introduction

This instruction manual provides essential information for the safe and effective installation, operation, and maintenance of your Sylvania 20921 FP21/835/ECO T5 Fluorescent Tube Light Bulb. Please read this manual thoroughly before use and retain it for future reference.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Risk of electric shock. Always turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before installing, removing, or servicing the light bulb or fixture. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death.

  • Ensure the fixture is compatible with T5 fluorescent bulbs and the specified wattage (21W).
  • Handle the bulb carefully. Fluorescent tubes are made of glass and can break if dropped or mishandled.
  • Do not use in wet locations unless the fixture is specifically rated for such use.
  • Do not dispose of fluorescent bulbs in regular household trash. They contain small amounts of mercury and should be recycled according to local regulations. Contact your local waste management authority for proper disposal instructions.
  • Avoid direct contact with the bulb surface immediately after operation, as it may be hot.

4. Setup (Installation)

Follow these steps to safely install your Sylvania T5 fluorescent tube:

  1. Ensure Power is OFF: Before beginning, locate the circuit breaker or fuse controlling the light fixture and turn it OFF. Verify that the power is disconnected.
  2. Remove Old Bulb (if applicable): If replacing an existing bulb, gently twist the old fluorescent tube approximately 90 degrees (a quarter turn) and carefully pull it straight out from the lampholders.
  3. Insert New Bulb: Align the two pins on each end of the new Sylvania T5 fluorescent tube with the slots in the lampholders of the fixture.
  4. Secure Bulb: Gently push the bulb into the lampholders until the pins are fully seated, then twist the bulb approximately 90 degrees until it locks into place. Ensure the bulb is securely seated and not loose.
  5. Restore Power: Once the bulb is securely installed, restore power to the fixture at the circuit breaker or fuse box.

5. Operating Instructions

After successful installation and power restoration, operate the Sylvania T5 fluorescent tube by using the standard wall switch or control mechanism connected to your light fixture. Fluorescent bulbs may take a few moments to reach full brightness, especially in colder environments.

6. Maintenance

Minimal maintenance is required for your Sylvania T5 fluorescent tube.

  • Cleaning: Periodically, with the power OFF and the bulb cool, gently wipe the tube with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust and debris. Do not use liquid cleaners directly on the bulb.
  • Replacement: Replace the bulb when it reaches the end of its useful life, indicated by flickering, dimming, or failure to illuminate. Refer to the installation instructions for replacement.

7. Troubleshooting

If your Sylvania T5 fluorescent tube is not functioning as expected, consider the following:

  • Bulb Does Not Light:
    • Check if the power supply to the fixture is on.
    • Ensure the bulb is correctly seated and twisted into the lampholders.
    • Inspect the bulb for visible damage (e.g., broken glass, blackened ends).
    • The fixture's ballast or starter (if applicable) may be faulty. Consult a qualified electrician if you suspect a fixture issue.
  • Bulb Flickers:
    • Flickering can indicate the bulb is nearing the end of its life and needs replacement.
    • Ensure the bulb is properly seated in the lampholders.
    • A faulty ballast in the fixture can also cause flickering.
  • Dim Light Output:
    • Over time, fluorescent bulbs naturally dim. If the light output is significantly reduced, the bulb may need replacement.
