Pentax Optio E40 Digital Camera User Manual

Model: E40

Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and effective use of your Pentax Optio E40 Digital Camera. The Optio E40 is an 8.1-megapixel compact digital camera featuring a 3x optical zoom lens, designed for ease of use. It incorporates Face Recognition AF and AE technology and Digital Shake Reduction for enhanced image quality. The camera operates on widely available AA batteries, making it convenient for travel and everyday photography.

What's in the Box

Please verify that the following item is present in the package:

  • AA Batteries (for initial use)

Setup

1. Installing Batteries

The Optio E40 uses two AA-size batteries. Ensure correct polarity when inserting them.

  1. Open the battery compartment cover located on the bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert two AA batteries, matching the (+) and (-) terminals as indicated inside the compartment.
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

Note: For optimal performance and battery life, use alkaline or Ni-MH rechargeable AA batteries. The camera is designed for low power consumption, allowing approximately 240 photos with alkaline batteries.

2. Inserting an SD Memory Card

The camera stores images on an SD memory card (not included). A card is required to take more than a few pictures, as internal memory is limited.

  1. Open the SD card slot cover, usually located on the side or bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert the SD card with the metal contacts facing the front of the camera, until it clicks into place.
  3. Close the SD card slot cover securely.

Caution: Ensure the camera is turned off before inserting or removing the SD card to prevent data corruption.

3. Initial Power On

Press the power button to turn on the camera. The 2.4-inch LCD monitor will display the startup screen. You may be prompted to set the date and time upon first use.

  • Zoom Lever: Located at the top right, used to adjust optical and digital zoom.
  • Playback Button (Blue Triangle): Press to review captured images and videos.
  • Four-Way Controller: Used for navigation through menus and settings. The up, down, left, and right directions often have secondary functions (e.g., Flash, Self-timer).
  • OK Button: Confirms selections in menus and settings.
  • MODE Button: Cycles through various shooting modes.
  • MENU Button: Accesses the camera's main menu for advanced settings.
  • Green Button / Delete Button: In shooting mode, this may activate "Green Mode" for automated settings. In playback mode, it functions as a delete button (often requiring confirmation).

1. Taking Photos

The Optio E40 offers several modes to simplify photography:

  • Auto Picture Mode: The camera automatically detects shooting conditions (Landscape, Portrait, Night Scene, Normal) and selects optimal settings. This is ideal for beginners.
  • Green Mode: A single button press automates exposure, sensitivity, white balance, and other parameters for still images, making it easy for anyone to take a picture without adjusting settings.
  • Program Mode: Allows more control over settings while the camera still assists with exposure.
  • Scene Modes: Specific modes like Portrait, Landscape, and Night Scene optimize settings for particular scenarios.

To take a picture:

  1. Turn on the camera.
  2. Select your desired shooting mode using the MODE button.
  3. Frame your shot using the 2.4-inch LCD monitor.
  4. Press the shutter button halfway down to focus. The camera will beep when focus is achieved.
  5. Press the shutter button fully to capture the image.

2. Face Recognition AF and AE

This feature automatically detects and focuses on faces within the frame, adjusting exposure to ensure faces are well-lit. It is active in "Auto Picture," "Program," "Portrait," and "Kids" photography modes when the camera is directed at people from the front.

3. Digital SR (Shake Reduction)

The Digital SR mode helps reduce camera shake and blurring in still images by automatically adjusting sensitivity up to ISO 1000. This allows for faster shutter speeds, resulting in clearer photos, especially in low light conditions.

4. Zoom Function

The camera features a 3x optical zoom and a 4x digital zoom, providing a total zoom capability of approximately 12x.

  • Optical Zoom: Use the zoom lever to zoom in or out without losing image quality.
  • Digital Zoom: Beyond the optical zoom range, the camera will engage digital zoom. While it extends the reach, digital zoom can reduce image quality.

5. Recording Movies

The Optio E40 can record movies at resolutions up to 640 x 480 pixels. To record a movie:

  1. Switch to Movie mode (usually via the MODE button).
  2. Press the shutter button to start recording.
  3. Press the shutter button again to stop recording.

6. Playback and Review

Press the Playback button (blue triangle icon) to view your captured photos and videos. Use the four-way controller to navigate through images. The Calendar Display function allows for easier image retrieval based on the capture date.

7. Continuous Shooting Mode

This mode allows you to capture a rapid sequence of images. The camera can record up to 16 consecutive images (640 x 480 pixels per image) in a 2-second burst. Access this mode through the camera's menu settings.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning the Lens and LCD Screen: Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces. Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals.
  • Battery Care: Remove batteries if the camera will not be used for an extended period. Store batteries in a cool, dry place.
  • Storage: Store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
