La Crosse Technology BC-700 Alpha Power Battery Charger User Manual

Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and efficient operation of your La Crosse Technology BC-700 Alpha Power Battery Charger. This device is designed to charge NiCd and NiMH AA and AAA rechargeable batteries, offering multiple modes for optimal battery care.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Read all instructions before using the charger.
  • This charger is designed exclusively for NiCd and NiMH AA and AAA rechargeable batteries. Do not attempt to charge any other battery types, such as alkaline, lithium, or carbon-zinc, as this may lead to explosion, rupture, or leakage, causing personal injury or property damage.
  • Use only the provided AC/DC adapter. Using an incorrect adapter may damage the charger or batteries.
  • Do not expose the charger to rain or moisture.
  • Do not operate the charger if it has been dropped or damaged.
  • Keep the charger away from children.
  • Ensure proper ventilation during charging.
  • The charger includes overheat detection to prevent over-charging and ensure safety.

Package Contents

  • La Crosse Technology BC-700 Alpha Power Battery Charger
  • AC Power Adapter (100-240V AC input)

Setup

  1. Connect Power Adapter: Plug the AC power adapter into a standard wall outlet, then connect the small plug into the DC 3V input port on the back of the charger.
  2. Insert Batteries: Insert one to four AA or AAA NiCd/NiMH rechargeable batteries into the charging slots. Ensure correct polarity (+/-) as indicated on the charger. The charger features four independent channels, allowing you to charge different battery types and sizes simultaneously.

Upon insertion, the charger will automatically begin charging at a default rate of 200mA within 4 seconds. You can then adjust settings as needed.

Operating Instructions

The BC-700 charger offers four distinct operating modes and adjustable charging currents. Each battery slot operates independently, allowing for flexible battery management.

Understanding the Display and Controls

Image: Front view of the La Crosse Technology BC-700 charger, showing the LCD display and control buttons (MODE, DISPLAY, CURRENT) at the top, and individual battery slot buttons (1-4) below the display.

The charger features an LCD display that shows information for each battery, including current voltage, charge/discharge current, time spent, and capacity (mAh/Ah) upon completion. Three main buttons (MODE, DISPLAY, CURRENT) control the overall operation, while four smaller buttons (1, 2, 3, 4) allow individual control for each battery slot.

Selecting Operating Modes

After inserting batteries, you have a few seconds to select a mode for each battery before it defaults to Charge mode at 200mA. Press the corresponding battery slot button (1-4) to select that battery, then press the MODE button to cycle through the options:

  • Charge Mode: Charges the battery at the selected current. This is the default mode.
  • Discharge Mode: Discharges the battery completely before recharging it to full capacity. This helps reduce the memory effect in NiCd batteries.
  • Refresh Mode: Discharges and recharges the battery up to 20 cycles or until its capacity is maximized. This mode is useful for rejuvenating older batteries that no longer hold a full charge.
  • Test Mode: First charges the battery to full capacity, then discharges it completely to measure its true capacity (displayed in mAh or Ah), and finally recharges it to full capacity.

Adjusting Charging Current

The BC-700 allows you to select charging rates for faster charging or to prolong battery life. After selecting a battery slot, press the CURRENT button to cycle through the available options:

  • 200mA: Slower charge, generally recommended for extending battery lifespan.
  • 500mA: Moderate charge rate.
  • 700mA: Faster charge rate.

Important Note on Current Selection: If charging only one battery and you wish to use 500mA or 700mA, that battery must be placed in Bay 1. When charging multiple batteries, the charging speed for all batteries cannot exceed the current set for the battery in Bay 1.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Disconnect the charger from power before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the charger in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
  • Battery Terminals: Periodically inspect the battery terminals for any corrosion or debris. Clean gently with a cotton swab if necessary.

Troubleshooting

  • Charger Not Powering On: Ensure the AC power adapter is securely connected to both the wall outlet and the charger. Verify the wall outlet is functional.
  • Battery Not Recognized / Not Charging:
    • Check that the battery is inserted with correct polarity.
    • Ensure the battery is a compatible NiCd or NiMH AA/AAA type.
    • For completely depleted batteries that are not recognized, try this workaround: With the charger turned OFF, place a full battery and the depleted battery in adjacent slots. Briefly (about 10 seconds) bridge the positive terminals of both batteries with a paperclip or conductive material. Then, remove the paperclip and turn on the charger to attempt charging the depleted battery.
  • Display Issues: If the LCD display is blank or showing erratic readings, try disconnecting and reconnecting the power adapter.
  • Overheating: The charger has built-in overheat detection. If it feels excessively hot, disconnect it immediately and allow it to cool down. Ensure adequate ventilation around the charger.
