Hollywood Racks Express Trunk Mounted Bike Rack Instruction Manual

Model: E3 | Brand: Hollywood Racks

1. Introduction

The Hollywood Racks Express Trunk Mounted Bike Rack (Model E3) is an economical and user-friendly solution for transporting bicycles on your vehicle's trunk. Designed for ease of use, this rack comes fully pre-assembled and folds flat for convenient storage. It features soft rubber bike cradles and EPDM rubber straps to securely hold up to three bicycles, protecting their finish during transport.

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective setup, operation, and maintenance of your Hollywood Racks Express bike rack. Please read all instructions carefully before installation and use.

2. Safety Information

  • Weight Capacity: Do not exceed the maximum capacity of 35 lbs (15.8 kg) per bicycle. Overloading can lead to rack failure and potential damage to your vehicle or bikes.
  • Vehicle Compatibility: Always consult the official Hollywood Racks vehicle fit guide to ensure this rack is compatible with your specific vehicle model. Improper fit can compromise stability and safety.
  • Bike Compatibility: Some bicycle frames, such as kids' bikes, ladies' frame bikes, and certain mountain bikes, may require a top tube adapter (sold separately) to provide a stable mounting point. Ensure bikes are level and stable.
  • Secure Attachment: Before each use and periodically during long trips, verify that all straps are tightly secured and the rack is firmly attached to the vehicle. Loose connections can cause the rack or bikes to shift or detach.
  • Clearance: Ensure adequate clearance between the bikes, the rack, and the vehicle's exhaust, rear lights, and license plate. Bikes should not obstruct visibility or vehicle functions.
  • Regular Inspection: Inspect the rack, straps, and cradles for any signs of wear, damage, or fatigue before each use. Do not use the rack if any components are compromised.
  • Driving Habits: Drive cautiously, especially over bumps, during turns, and when braking. Avoid sudden maneuvers that could dislodge the bikes or rack.
  • Protect Vehicle Paint: While the rack is designed to minimize contact, it is recommended to place protective film or masking tape on vehicle surfaces where the rack's hooks or feet make contact to prevent paint scratches.

3. Setup and Installation

The Hollywood Racks Express bike rack comes fully pre-assembled, simplifying the initial setup. Follow these steps to properly install the rack on your vehicle's trunk:

  1. Unfold the Rack: Carefully unfold the rack from its flat storage position. The main arms and support legs will lock into place.
  2. Position on Vehicle: Place the upper padded feet of the rack on the top edge of your vehicle's trunk or hatch. The lower padded feet should rest on the bumper or lower edge of the trunk. Ensure the rack is centered horizontally on the vehicle.
  3. Attach Upper Straps: Locate the two upper straps. Hook the metal clips of these straps securely to the top edge of the trunk or hatch, above the rack's upper feet. Pull the straps tight to secure the top of the rack.
  4. Attach Side Straps: Locate the two side straps. Hook the metal clips to the side edges of the trunk or hatch. Pull these straps tight to prevent horizontal movement.
  5. Attach Lower Straps: Locate the two lower straps. Hook the metal clips to the bottom edge of the trunk or hatch, or under the bumper if applicable. Pull these straps tight to secure the bottom of the rack.
  6. Adjust and Tighten: Systematically tighten all six straps, ensuring the rack is snug against the vehicle and does not wobble. The user-friendly hub adjustment system allows for fine-tuning the rack's angle for optimal fit. Re-check all straps after initial tightening.
  7. Final Check: Gently shake the rack to confirm it is securely mounted and stable. Ensure no straps are twisted and all hooks are fully engaged.

4. Operating Instructions

Once the rack is securely installed on your vehicle, you can proceed to load your bicycles.

  1. Prepare Bikes: Remove any loose items from your bicycles (e.g., water bottles, bags, child seats) that could fall off during transit.
  2. Load First Bike: Lift the first bicycle and place its top tube onto the rack's cradles. Ensure the bike is centered and balanced. If your bike has a non-standard frame (e.g., step-through, full suspension), a top tube adapter may be necessary to provide a stable mounting point.
  3. Secure First Bike: Use the EPDM rubber straps provided on the cradles to firmly secure the bike's frame to the rack. Wrap the straps around the frame and through the cradle slots, pulling them tight.
  4. Load Additional Bikes: Repeat the process for additional bicycles, up to the maximum capacity of three bikes. Alternate the direction of the bikes (e.g., first bike facing left, second bike facing right) to optimize space and prevent handlebar/pedal interference.
  5. Integrated Tie-Down Strap: Utilize the integrated tie-down strap for extra security. This strap can be used to bundle the bike wheels or frames together, preventing sway and movement during travel.
  6. Final Check: Before driving, walk around the vehicle and visually inspect the loaded bikes. Ensure they are stable, not touching the vehicle's paint, and that all straps are tight. Check that rear lights and license plate are not obstructed.

5. Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life of your Hollywood Racks Express bike rack and ensure continued safe operation.

  • Cleaning: Clean the rack periodically with mild soap and water to remove dirt, road grime, and salt. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely to prevent corrosion.
  • Strap and Cradle Inspection: Regularly inspect the EPDM rubber straps and soft rubber cradles for cracks, tears, or excessive wear. Replace any damaged components immediately.
  • Hardware Check: Periodically check all bolts, nuts, and pivot points for tightness. Tighten any loose hardware to ensure structural integrity.
  • Lubrication: Apply a small amount of silicone spray or light lubricant to the pivot points and adjustment mechanisms to ensure smooth operation.
  • Storage: When not in use, fold the rack flat and store it in a dry, protected area, such as your trunk or garage. This prevents exposure to harsh weather conditions and extends its lifespan.
