Safety Information

Hazard Risk: The toilet is connected to a holding tank via a through-hull fitting. If the toilet or its associated pipework develops a minor leak, it can rapidly escalate into a major leak, potentially causing the vessel to flood and sink. It is imperative to repair any leaks immediately.

Always close both seacocks (inlet and outlet) when the vessel is unattended or during servicing to prevent accidental flooding.

Servicing Instructions

Jabsco manual toilets are designed to be user-serviceable, and no special tools are generally required beyond basic hand tools.

General Preparation

  1. Before commencing any service, ensure both inlet and outlet seacocks are closed.
  2. Pump the toilet handle to empty the bowl and discharge line.
  3. Disconnect the discharge hose and the cylinder using a hose clamp. If the toilet is below the waterline, some water may remain in the discharge hose. Do not pump this water into the vessel.
  4. Disconnect the inlet hose and secure it with a hose clamp.
  5. Replace the base valve plug.
  6. Remove the toilet from its base.

1. Winterizing and Winterization - Preparation

Follow instructions for normal use and, in particular, ensure that the inlet seacock is closed when the vessel is unattended.

Important: Close both seacocks (even if secondary valves are fitted). If the vessel is left unattended with open seacocks, there is a risk of flooding.

2. Servicing - Seal Replacement

This procedure addresses leaks from the piston rod (key 28) at the top of the pump, the seal assembly (key 18), and the bowl. You will need the Jabsco Service Kit 29045-0000.

Seal Housing Assembly (Part No. 29044-2000):

  1. Unscrew the seal housing retaining nut (key 27) using a 17mm (5/8") spanner.
  2. Remove the seal housing retaining nut assembly from the toilet.
  3. Wrap some tape around the piston rod (key 28) to protect it.
  4. Unscrew the piston rod from the pump.
  5. Remove the thread at the top of the piston rod.
  6. Slide the seal housing assembly off the piston rod. Wrap one turn of tape around the bumper washer (key 20) to protect it.
  7. Remove the bumper washer and the piston rod from the piston rod. Remove the tape from the thread.
  8. Wrap some tape around the piston rod within 16mm (5/8") of the thread. Screw the piston rod through the tape and into the bumper washer until it is firmly seated. Remove the tape from the piston rod.
  9. Lubricate the seal assembly with water-resistant grease and tighten in place.

Caution: Gripping the piston rod with a tool anywhere other than the 16mm (5/8") below the handle can cause surface damage that will result in premature failure.

3. Pump Cylinder Replacement

Drain the complete system. Failure to do so may result in frost damage and subsequent leaks in the pipework of ceramic toilets.

  1. Open the inlet seacock.
  2. Remove the drain plug (key 8).
  3. Disconnect the discharge elbow (key 33) from the pump. You may need to remove the hose from the discharge elbow (key 34).
  4. Remove the hose clips and disconnect the hose ends from both seacock hose tails. If the toilet is below the waterline, ensure that all water is drained from the toilet system.

Caution: The use of anti-freeze is recommended to ensure that it completely drains the toilet system. This is a good way to do it and take the risk of frost damage by mistake.

Hazard: If the toilet is in use during spring, this is a good time to check the joker valve (key 30) and replace it if damaged.

4. Servicing - Overhaul

This procedure covers the complete overhaul using Jabsco 29045-0000, which contains all wearing parts. Refer to the original parts list for details.

Remove the pump assembly as follows:

  1. Loosen the hose clamp and disconnect the flushing water hose (key 1) from the top of the pump.
  2. Loosen the hose clamp and disconnect the discharge flange (key 33) that holds the discharge elbow (key 34) and hose to the pump cylinder (key 32).
  3. Remove the hose from the discharge elbow.
  4. Remove the 4 screws that secure the pump cylinder to the base.
  5. Lift the pump assembly and pull up the base valve gasket (key 16) and the joker valve (key 30).

Dismantle the pump assembly as follows:

  1. Remove the 4 screws that secure the valve cover (key 21).
  2. Remove the flush control (key 23) before lifting off the valve cover assembly and pushing out the valve cover (key 24).
  3. Remove the valve cover assembly and the spring (key 25).
  4. Remove the handle and the seal housing by unscrewing the piston rod (key 28) from the pump cylinder.
  5. Withdraw the piston assembly (key 28) and prise off the piston rod from the pump.
  6. Do NOT remove the seal from the base.
  7. Important: Refer to the "Servicing Instructions for Cleaning" section. Remove scale from the cylinder bore.
  8. Inspect the piston rod, pump cylinder, and joker valve, and renew them if they are damaged. Note that the joker valve is a critical component. If it is damaged, the pump will not work. Use the other parts in the kit as necessary.

Reassemble the pump as follows:

  1. Lubricate all seals with water-resistant grease.
  2. Fit the new seal assembly (key 18).
  3. Lubricate pump cylinder bore with water-resistant grease.
  4. Lubricate the piston rod and the top of the cylinder. Locate the top valve gasket (key 21) on its piston rod. Screw the piston rod into the pump cylinder. Tighten in place the valve cover and spring (key 25).
  5. Open the flush control (key 23) before lifting off the valve cover assembly.
  6. Locate the joker valve (key 30) on the top of the cylinder. Using the discharge flange (key 33), secure the discharge elbow (key 34) to the pump cylinder (key 32).
  7. Ensure that the base valve gasket (key 16) is seated correctly.
  8. Secure the pump assembly to the base with the 4 screws.
  9. Ensure that all hoses are connected and that the pump is not leaking.
  10. Examine all hoses throughout their length for chafing, kinks, and loose hose clips. Check all hose clips for corrosion and tighten them if necessary.
  11. Reconnect all hose ends and secure them with hose clamps.
  12. Ensure that the base drain plug is securely in place.

Caution: Do NOT lubricate rubber or plastic components with petroleum-based compounds as they can cause damage to gaskets or hose connections.

5. Servicing - Testing

After completing the overhaul, fill the bowl with water.

  1. Open the inlet seacock.
  2. Pump the toilet handle until the bowl is empty.
  3. Close the inlet seacock.
  4. Pump the toilet handle until the bowl is empty.
  5. Check for leaks.
