Maintenance and Storage
Proper handling and storage are crucial for maintaining film quality and achieving the best photographic results.
- Unexposed Film: Store unexposed film in a cool, dry place, ideally in its original sealed packaging. Refrigeration (not freezing) can extend shelf life, but allow film to reach room temperature before use to prevent condensation.
- Exposed Film: Process exposed film as soon as possible. If immediate processing is not possible, store exposed film in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat.
- Handling: Avoid touching the film surface directly. Handle film by its edges to prevent fingerprints and scratches.
- X-Ray Scanners: Airport X-ray scanners can damage film, especially high-speed film like ISO 400. Request a hand inspection for your film when traveling.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Blank or Underexposed Images | Incorrect exposure settings (too dark), film not loaded correctly, camera malfunction. | Verify camera settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed). Ensure film leader is properly engaged with take-up spool. Test camera with a dummy roll if possible. |
| Overexposed Images | Incorrect exposure settings (too bright), light leaks in camera. | Adjust camera settings for brighter conditions. Check camera seals for light leaks. |
| Color Shifts or Fading | Improper storage (heat, humidity), expired film, X-ray exposure. | Store film in cool, dry conditions. Check film expiration date. Request hand inspection at airports. |
| Scratches or Dust on Negatives | Improper handling during loading/unloading, dirty camera interior, poor processing. | Handle film by edges. Keep camera interior clean. Use a reputable film lab. |
