FUJIFILM X-E5 First Look Guide
This document provides an early look at the FUJIFILM X-E5 camera, intended for informational use only. Specifications are subject to change prior to launch.
Section 1: Overview
The FUJIFILM X-E5 is designed for photography enthusiasts seeking a blend of classic rangefinder aesthetics and modern performance. It features a 40.2-megapixel X-Trans 5 HR sensor, X-Processor 5, and in-body image stabilization (IBIS) for the first time in an X-E series camera. Its compact and lightweight design makes it suitable for everyday use. The camera includes a customizable Film Simulation Dial for quick access to saved custom recipes. It is compatible with over 40 X Mount lenses and accessories. The new XF23mmF2.8 R WR pancake lens will be available in a kit with the X-E5.
Section 2: Target Audience
The primary audience for the FUJIFILM X-E5 includes experienced photographers looking for a second Fujifilm body or those who appreciate the X Series' classic design, portability, and image quality. It is also targeted at newer photographers who value aesthetics and size, potentially drawn to the Fujifilm brand through models like the X100VI, with which the X-E5 shares a similar design. The camera is ideal for everyday use and various types of photography, often paired with compact prime or zoom lenses.
Section 3: Getting Set Up
To get started with the FUJIFILM X-E5:
- Fully Charge the Battery: Use the USB-C port on the camera. The X-E5 uses the NP-W126S battery, common to other X Series cameras.
- Install a Memory Card: The SD card slot is located in the battery chamber. A UHS-II SDXC card with at least 64GB capacity is recommended for optimal performance.
- Reset the Camera: To clear any previous settings, navigate to the SET UP menu (wrench icon ⚙️), select USER SETTING, then RESET, and confirm INITIALIZE. After resetting, follow on-screen prompts to set language, area, and date/time.
- Change the Image Quality Setting: Due to the pre-release nature of the camera, native RAW files may not be fully compatible with current software. It is recommended to use JPEG or HEIF with the FINE setting, or a mode that saves both RAW and JPEG/HEIF files for future use. These settings are found in the IMAGE QUALITY SETTING menu.
Section 4: Classic Looks, Ultimate Flexibility
The FUJIFILM X-E5 features a design inspired by classic film cameras, similar to the X100VI. When paired with the XF23mmF2.8 lens, its dimensions are 124.9mm (4.9 in) wide, 72.9mm (2.9 in) high, and 62.1mm (2.4 in) deep, weighing 535g (1.18 lbs). This allows users access to over 40 compatible XF lenses and accessories, offering significant creative flexibility.
Section 5: Rangefinder-Style Design
The FUJIFILM X-E5 echoes the timeless style of rangefinder film cameras with its offset viewfinder and machined aluminum top-plate, offering a premium look and feel. Analog controls provide quick access to functions, and a Bluetooth connectivity button on the base, resembling a film rewind button, enhances the camera's nostalgic feel.
Section 6: Customizable Film Simulation Dial
The FUJIFILM X-E5 features a customizable Film Simulation dial located under the aluminum top-plate. This dial provides easy access to Fujifilm's unique Film Simulation modes. For the first time, users can save and recall custom Film Simulation recipes using the FS1, FS2, and FS3 positions on the dial. To assign a recipe, navigate to the IMAGE QUALITY SETTING menu, select FILM SIMULATION DIAL SETTING, choose the desired dial position, and customize the attributes.
Section 7: In-Body Image Stabilization
The FUJIFILM X-E5 is the first X-E series camera to include In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS). This feature allows for handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds, beneficial in low-light conditions where tripods are impractical. The IBIS system offers up to seven stops of benefit at the center of the image (or six at the edges, based on CIPA 2024 standards). IBIS functionality can be adjusted in the SHOOTING SETTING menu under IS MODE, with options for CONTINUOUS, SHOOTING ONLY, or OFF.
Section 8: Digital Teleconverter
Equipped with the 40.2-megapixel X-Trans 5 HR sensor, the FUJIFILM X-E5 allows for digital cropping to get closer to subjects. The Digital Teleconverter feature offers 1.4x and 2x zoom options. It can be accessed via a four-position lever on the front of the camera (push left to cycle options) or through the SHOOTING SETTING menu by selecting DIGITAL TELE. CONV. The front lever also cycles through aspect ratios when pulled to the right.
Section 9: Viewfinder Features
The FUJIFILM X-E5 viewfinder provides an accurate scene preview and offers functions that emulate an optical viewfinder experience. It includes three Surround View modes (black, semi-transparent, or line outline) to help anticipate subjects moving into frame. A Simple View option mimics an analog film SLR viewfinder, displaying exposure information at the bottom and an exposure accuracy needle. These settings are accessible via the SCREEN SETTING option in the SET UP menu.
Section 10: XF23mmF2.8 R WR Pancake Lens
The FUJIFILM X-E5 will be available body-only or as a kit with the new XF23mmF2.8 R WR lens. This popular lens features a compact pancake design, weighing just 90g (3.17 oz), making it highly portable, similar to the FUJIFILM X100VI. The XF23mmF2.8 R WR is weather-resistant, has a minimum focusing distance of 20cm, and an 11-blade aperture for smooth bokeh. The X-E5 is compatible with over 40 X Mount lenses and accessories.
