Rode SVM
Rode SVM Stereo VideoMic On-Camera Microphone User Manual
Model: SVM | Brand: Rode
Introduction
The Rode SVM Stereo VideoMic is an on-camera microphone designed for capturing high-quality stereo audio. It features an X/Y configured supercardioid stereo microphone, suitable for various video recording applications. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your SVM microphone to ensure optimal performance.
Setup
1. Battery Installation
The SVM microphone requires one 9V battery for operation.
- Locate the battery compartment on the microphone.
- Open the compartment cover.
- Insert a fresh 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
2. Mounting the Microphone
The SVM is designed to mount onto a camera's cold-shoe mount.
- Slide the microphone's cold-shoe adapter into your camera's hot/cold shoe mount.
- Tighten the locking wheel on the adapter to secure the microphone in place.

3. Connecting to Camera
Connect the microphone to your camera's audio input using the appropriate cable (typically a 3.5mm stereo jack).
Operating Instructions
Powering On/Off
Locate the power switch on the microphone. Slide it to the 'ON' position to activate the microphone. Ensure the power indicator light illuminates. Slide to 'OFF' when not in use to conserve battery life.
High-Pass Filter (HPF)
The SVM features a two-step high-pass filter (HPF) switch.
- Flat: No filter applied. Use for full-range audio capture.
- 80 Hz: Engages a filter that reduces low-frequency noise below 80 Hz. This is useful for minimizing rumble from air conditioners, traffic, or wind noise.
-10dB Pad Switch
The -10dB pad switch reduces the microphone's output level by 10 decibels. Use this setting when recording in very loud environments to prevent audio distortion (clipping).
Windscreen Usage
A custom-designed integral windshield is included. For outdoor recording or in windy conditions, attach the included windscreen (often referred to as a "dead kitten" or "dead cat") over the microphone capsule to significantly reduce wind noise.

Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the microphone body. Avoid using liquid cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: When not in use, store the microphone in a protective case to prevent dust and physical damage. Remove the 9V battery if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
- Windscreen Care: The furry windscreen can be gently cleaned with a soft brush or lint roller.
Troubleshooting
- No Audio Output:
- Ensure the microphone is powered on and the battery is fresh.
- Verify the audio cable is securely connected to both the microphone and the camera's input.
- Check your camera's audio input settings and levels.
- Distorted Audio / Clipping:
- Engage the -10dB pad switch if recording in very loud environments.
- Reduce the audio input level on your camera.
- Excessive Wind Noise:
- Ensure the furry windscreen is properly installed over the microphone capsule.
- Engage the 80 Hz high-pass filter to reduce low-frequency wind rumble.
- Low-Frequency Rumble:
- Engage the 80 Hz high-pass filter to reduce unwanted low-frequency sounds from sources like HVAC systems or traffic.
