2. Safety Information

WARNING: Electrical shock hazard. Improper installation or use can result in serious injury or death. Always follow local electrical codes and safety guidelines.

  • Professional Installation Required: Installation of this transfer panel must be performed by a qualified, licensed electrician in accordance with all applicable electrical codes.
  • Generator Safety: Always operate generators outdoors in a well-ventilated area to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never operate a generator indoors or in an enclosed space.
  • Interlocked System: The panel features an interlocked breaker system designed to prevent simultaneous connection of utility and generator power, which could cause severe damage to the electrical system and generator, and pose a safety risk. Do not attempt to bypass or modify this interlock.
  • Disconnect Power: Before performing any wiring or maintenance, ensure all power sources (utility and generator) are disconnected and locked out.
  • Read Instructions: Read and understand all instructions and safety warnings in this manual before installation or operation.

3. Setup and Installation

This section provides general guidance. Refer to the detailed wiring diagrams and instructions provided with the physical product for specific installation steps. Installation must be performed by a qualified, licensed electrician.

3.1 Pre-Installation Checks

  • Verify that the transfer panel's ratings (50A generator, 100A utility, 12,500W generator capacity) are compatible with your generator and existing electrical service.
  • Ensure the installation location is indoors, dry, and easily accessible.
  • Gather all necessary tools and materials, including appropriate wiring, conduit, and circuit breakers (not included).

3.2 Mounting the Panel

Mount the transfer panel securely to a wall stud or other suitable structural support using appropriate fasteners. Ensure the panel is level and at a convenient height for operation and maintenance.

3.3 Wiring Connections

  1. Utility Input: Connect the utility power supply to the designated utility input terminals within the panel. This connection typically comes from your main service panel.
  2. Generator Input: Wire the external CS6375 power inlet to the generator input terminals in the transfer panel. This inlet will be used to connect your portable generator.
  3. Branch Circuits: Identify the critical branch circuits you wish to power with the generator (e.g., refrigerator, furnace, lights). Disconnect these circuits from your main service panel and connect them to the appropriate circuit breaker positions within the TRC1005A transfer panel. The panel has provisions for twelve to twenty branch circuits.
  4. Grounding and Bonding: Ensure proper grounding and bonding of the transfer panel according to local electrical codes.
  5. Circuit Breaker Installation: Install appropriate circuit breakers (30 Amp to 125 Amp combinations are supported) for both utility and generator circuits as required.

After all wiring is complete, have a qualified electrician inspect the installation before applying power.

4. Operating Instructions

The TRC1005A transfer panel is designed for safe operation during power outages. Always follow these steps to switch between utility and generator power.

4.1 Switching to Generator Power

  1. Turn Off Main Utility Breaker: At your main service panel, turn off the main utility breaker that feeds the TRC1005A transfer panel.
  2. Turn Off Branch Circuit Breakers: At the TRC1005A panel, turn off all individual branch circuit breakers that you intend to power with the generator.
  3. Connect Generator: Connect your portable generator to the CS6375 power inlet using a compatible generator cord.
  4. Start Generator: Start your generator according to its manufacturer's instructions and allow it to stabilize.
  5. Engage Generator Breaker: On the TRC1005A panel, move the interlocked generator main breaker to the "ON" position. The interlock mechanism will prevent the utility main breaker from being turned on simultaneously.
  6. Restore Branch Circuits: Individually turn on the desired branch circuit breakers within the TRC1005A panel. Monitor the built-in wattmeters to ensure proper load balancing and avoid overloading the generator.

4.2 Switching Back to Utility Power

  1. Turn Off Branch Circuit Breakers: At the TRC1005A panel, turn off all individual branch circuit breakers.
  2. Disengage Generator Breaker: Move the interlocked generator main breaker to the "OFF" position.
  3. Shut Down Generator: Turn off and disconnect your portable generator.
  4. Restore Main Utility Breaker: At your main service panel, turn on the main utility breaker that feeds the TRC1005A transfer panel.
  5. Restore Branch Circuits: Individually turn on the desired branch circuit breakers within the TRC1005A panel.

5. Maintenance

The Reliance Controls TRC1005A transfer panel requires minimal maintenance. However, periodic inspection by a qualified electrician is recommended to ensure continued safe and reliable operation.

  • Annual Inspection: Have a qualified electrician inspect the panel annually for loose connections, signs of wear, corrosion, or damage.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the area around the transfer panel clear of obstructions. Ensure the panel's exterior is clean and free of dust or debris. Do not use liquids to clean the interior of the panel.
  • Test Operation: Periodically test the transfer panel's operation by simulating a power outage (following all safety procedures) to ensure the interlock mechanism and all breakers function correctly.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your TRC1005A transfer panel, review the following common troubleshooting steps. For complex electrical issues, contact a qualified electrician.

6.1 No Power to Circuits (Generator Mode)

  • Generator On? Ensure your portable generator is running and producing power.
  • Generator Breaker On? Verify the main generator breaker on the TRC1005A panel is in the "ON" position.
  • Branch Breakers On? Check that the individual branch circuit breakers for the affected circuits are in the "ON" position.
  • Overload? The generator may be overloaded. Turn off some appliances or circuits. Check the wattmeters for load indication.
  • Generator Output Breaker: Check the main output breaker on your generator itself.

6.2 Interlock Not Engaging

  • Breaker Position: Ensure the opposing main breaker (utility or generator) is fully in the "OFF" position before attempting to engage the other. The interlock mechanism requires one to be off before the other can be turned on.
  • Obstruction: Check for any physical obstruction preventing the interlock from moving freely.

6.3 Wattmeters Not Displaying

  • Power Flow: Ensure there is active power flowing through the circuits being monitored by the wattmeters.
  • Connection: If meters are still not functioning, there may be an internal wiring issue. Contact a qualified electrician.
