1. Introduction
The Permatex 80037 Valve Grinding Compound is designed to facilitate valve grinding and seating operations. This product effectively removes burrs, surface defects, carbon deposits, gum, and corrosion from valve surfaces. It is formulated to mix with water, creating an easy-to-use paste, and is suitable for lapping and grinding chromium components.

2. Safety Information
WARNING: Read all instructions and safety information before use. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury or property damage.
- Harmful if Swallowed: Do not ingest. If swallowed, immediately call a physician or poison control center.
- Eye and Skin Contact: Avoid contact with eyes and skin. In case of contact, flush affected area with water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
- Ventilation: Use in a well-ventilated area.
- Keep Out of Reach of Children: Store in a secure location away from children and pets.
- Contains Silicon Carbide: This abrasive material requires careful handling.
- Personal Protective Equipment: Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and gloves, when handling this product.

3. Preparation for Use
- Clean Surfaces: Ensure the valve and valve seat surfaces are clean and free from oil, grease, and loose debris. Use a suitable cleaner if necessary.
- Gather Tools: Have all necessary tools ready, such as a valve lapping tool, suction cups, and cleaning cloths.
- Prepare Compound: The Permatex 80037 compound is a pre-mixed paste. No additional mixing with water is typically required unless a thinner consistency is desired for specific applications. If thinning, add water sparingly and mix thoroughly.

4. Operating Instructions
This compound is designed for both hand and machine grinding operations. Always refer to the specific equipment manufacturer's instructions for detailed procedures.
4.1. Valve Lapping (Manual Method)
- Apply Compound: Apply a thin, even coat of Permatex 80037 Valve Grinding Compound to the seating face of the valve. Avoid excessive application.
- Position Valve: Insert the valve into its respective valve guide.
- Attach Lapping Tool: Secure a valve lapping tool (typically with a suction cup) to the head of the valve.
- Lap Valve: Rotate the valve back and forth against its seat using the lapping tool. Apply light, even pressure. Periodically lift the valve slightly and rotate it to a new position to ensure even grinding.
- Inspect Progress: Continue lapping until a uniform, dull grey ring appears on both the valve face and the valve seat, indicating proper contact.
- Clean Thoroughly: After achieving the desired finish, thoroughly clean all traces of the grinding compound from the valve, valve seat, valve guide, and surrounding areas. Use a clean cloth and a suitable solvent or water. Residual compound can cause accelerated wear.
4.2. Other Applications (e.g., Sharpening Reel Mowers)
For sharpening reel-type lawn mowers, apply a thin layer of the compound to the cutting edges of the reel blades. Operate the mower briefly to allow the compound to abrade and sharpen the blades. Follow the mower manufacturer's specific instructions for sharpening. Thoroughly clean all components after sharpening to remove abrasive residue.
5. Maintenance
Proper maintenance of the compound itself involves ensuring the cap is securely replaced after each use to prevent drying. Store the tube in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
After using the compound on engine components or tools, it is critical to perform thorough cleaning. Residual abrasive particles can cause significant damage if not completely removed. Use appropriate cleaning agents and methods to ensure all compound is gone.
6. Troubleshooting
- Compound Dries Out: If the compound becomes too dry, add a very small amount of water and mix thoroughly to restore paste consistency. Do not add excessive water, as this can reduce abrasive effectiveness.
- Uneven Grinding: Ensure even pressure is applied during lapping. Lift and rotate the valve periodically to prevent uneven wear patterns. Check the valve guide for excessive wear, which can lead to uneven seating.
- Compound Residue: If residue is difficult to remove, use a stiff brush and a suitable solvent, followed by a thorough rinse with water. Ensure all parts are completely dry before reassembly.
