Kidde AccessPoint 00524 KeySafe Portable Spin Dial Lock Box

Instruction Manual

Introduction

The Kidde AccessPoint 00524 KeySafe Original is a portable key lock box designed for secure key storage and convenient access. This robust key safe can hold up to 3 keys and is easily attached to doorknobs, fences, railings, or pipes without requiring any tools. It features a spin dial combination lock, providing over 10,000 possible combinations for enhanced security. The combination can be changed at any time to maintain security. Constructed from sturdy metal with a protective rubber shell, the KeySafe is designed to be rust-resistant and durable.

This manual provides detailed instructions for setting up, operating, and maintaining your Kidde AccessPoint KeySafe to ensure optimal performance and security.

Setup: Setting Your Combination

The Kidde AccessPoint KeySafe allows you to set your own three-letter combination. This process requires careful attention to detail.

  1. Open the KeySafe: If the KeySafe is new, it may come with a factory-set combination (e.g., S-P-I). Use this combination to open the unit first. Refer to the "Operating" section for how to open the lock box.
  2. Access the Combination Mechanism: Once the KeySafe is open, you will need a Phillips head screwdriver. Locate the two screws on the back of the dial assembly (the part that detaches when opened). Carefully remove these two screws.
  3. Disassemble for Combination Change: With the screws removed, gently separate the back plate from the dial mechanism. You will see a series of small rings or discs inside. These rings correspond to the letters of the combination.
  4. Set Your Desired Combination: Align the internal rings to your chosen three-letter combination. Ensure each ring is precisely set to the desired letter. It is crucial to ensure that the grooves on the top two combination discs do not align with each other, as this can create a potential vulnerability.
  5. Reassemble the Mechanism: Carefully place the back plate back onto the dial mechanism, ensuring all components are correctly seated. Reinsert and tighten the two Phillips head screws.
  6. Test the New Combination: Before closing the KeySafe with keys inside, test your new combination several times to ensure it opens correctly. If it does not open, repeat the combination setting steps.

Important: Write down your new combination and store it in a secure, memorable location. Do not store the combination inside the KeySafe.

Operating the KeySafe

Follow these steps to open and close your Kidde AccessPoint KeySafe:

  1. Clear the Dial: Turn the spin dial several times to the right (clockwise) to clear any previous attempts or settings.
  2. Enter First Letter: Continue turning the dial to the right until the first letter of your combination aligns with the indicator mark.
  3. Enter Second Letter: Turn the dial to the left (counter-clockwise), passing the first letter of your combination, and then continue to the second letter of your combination. Align it with the indicator mark.
  4. Enter Third Letter: Turn the dial back to the right (clockwise) until the final letter of your combination aligns with the indicator mark.
  5. Open the KeySafe: With the combination entered, manually press down on the button located above the dial. The dial assembly/front door will detach from the main body of the lock box, allowing access to the keys inside. Note that the key door is not hinged and will separate into two pieces.
  6. Retrieve/Store Keys: Take out or place the keys as needed. The KeySafe can hold up to 3 standard keys.
  7. Close the KeySafe: Realign the dial assembly/front door with the main body of the lock box. Manually press up on the door release button (or ensure it clicks into place) to relock the unit. Spin the dial to scramble the combination, securing the KeySafe.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and reliable operation of your KeySafe, consider the following maintenance tips:

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the exterior of the KeySafe with a damp cloth to remove dirt and grime. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the finish or rubber shell.
  • Environmental Protection: While constructed of sturdy metal with a protective rubber shell designed to resist rust, the KeySafe is not water-resistant. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rain, snow, or freezing temperatures, which could affect the internal mechanism or cause the unit to freeze shut.
  • Mechanism Check: Occasionally check the spin dial and opening mechanism for smooth operation. If you notice any stiffness, a small amount of graphite lubricant (not oil-based lubricants) can be applied to the moving parts.

Troubleshooting

  • KeySafe Will Not Open:
    • Ensure you are entering the correct combination.
    • Verify that you are following the operating steps precisely, especially clearing the dial and turning past the first number when entering the second.
    • The dial mechanism might be stiff. Try gently wiggling the dial while entering the combination.
  • Difficulty Setting Combination:
    • Ensure all internal rings are perfectly aligned with your chosen letters during the setup process.
    • Double-check that the back plate is correctly reassembled and the screws are tightened.
    • If the issue persists, carefully repeat the combination setting steps from the beginning.
  • KeySafe Frozen Shut:
    • If exposed to freezing temperatures, ice may form within the mechanism. Bring the KeySafe indoors to thaw.
    • To prevent this, avoid placing the KeySafe in locations prone to extreme cold and moisture.
  • Security Concerns (Combination Decoding):
    • When setting your combination, ensure that the grooves on the top two combination discs do not align with each other. This helps prevent potential decoding by advanced methods.
