The Stanley 77-355 IntelliSensor Pro is designed to detect wood and metal studs, as well as live AC wires behind walls. Its advanced features provide accurate and reliable readings.

Figure 1: Front view of the Stanley 77-355 IntelliSensor Pro Metal Stud Sensor. Shows the main body, display area, and sensor pad.
Key components include:
- Sensor Pad: Located on the back, this area must be flush against the wall for accurate readings.
- LED Panel: Provides visual indication of stud location, depth, and live wire detection.
- Mode Selection Button: Used to switch between wood, metal, and deep scan modes.
- Power Button: Turns the device on and off.
- Battery Compartment: Located on the back, for battery installation.
4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
- Slide the cover open.
- Insert a fresh 9V alkaline battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
Note: Always use fresh batteries for optimal performance. Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the LED panel.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Powering On and Calibration
- Press the Power button to turn on the device.
- Place the device flat against the wall in the area you wish to scan, ensuring no hands are touching the sensor pad.
- Wait for the device to calibrate. This usually takes a few seconds and is indicated by a specific pattern on the LED panel or an audible beep. Do not move the device during calibration.
5.2 Selecting a Mode
The IntelliSensor Pro offers multiple modes for different detection needs:
- Wood Stud Mode: For detecting wood studs.
- Metal Mode: Specifically designed to detect steel and copper pipes (both ferrous and nonferrous metals).
- Deep Scan Mode: For detecting objects at greater depths.
Press the Mode Selection button repeatedly to cycle through the available modes. The selected mode will be indicated on the LED panel.
5.3 Scanning for Objects
- After calibration and mode selection, slowly slide the device horizontally across the wall surface.
- Maintain constant contact with the wall.
- The LED panel will illuminate and an audible sound will be emitted when a stud or metal object is detected. The intensity of the LEDs and the pitch of the sound may indicate proximity to the center of the object.
- Mark the edges of the detected object. Scan from the opposite direction to confirm the location and width.
5.4 Depth Indication and Live Wire Detection
- The multimode LED panel provides accurate depth indication, reading multiple depths of both wood and metal (1/2", 1", 1-1/2").
- The device features continuous live wire detection. A specific indicator on the LED panel will light up if live AC wiring is detected, even when scanning for studs or metal. Exercise extreme caution when live wires are indicated.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
Wipe the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the device is dry before storage.
6.2 Storage
Store the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Remove the battery if the device will not be used for an extended period.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not turn on. | Dead or incorrectly installed battery. | Check battery polarity; replace with a fresh 9V battery. |
| Inaccurate readings or constant beeping. | Improper calibration; device moved during calibration; scanning over highly textured surfaces. | Recalibrate the device by placing it flat against the wall before turning it on or after changing position. Ensure smooth, even contact with the wall. |
| Cannot detect objects. | Incorrect mode selected; object too deep; thick wall material. | Ensure the correct mode (Wood, Metal, Deep Scan) is selected. Try Deep Scan mode. Note that very thick or dense wall materials may limit detection depth. |
