3. Setup

Hive does not use a traditional game board. The playing area is formed dynamically by the placement of the hexagonal tiles. To begin a game:

1. Each player selects a set of 11 tiles (either light or dark colored).
2. Determine the first player.
3. The first player places any one of their tiles to start the 'Hive'. This tile becomes the central point of the game.
4. Subsequent tiles must be placed so that they touch at least one already-laid tile of the player's own color.
5. Crucially, newly placed tiles must not touch any tiles of the opponent's color, with the sole exception of the second player's very first tile.
6. During the first four moves of the game (two moves per player), both players must place their Queen Bee tile onto the Hive.

4. Operating (How to Play)

The objective of Hive is to completely surround your opponent's Queen Bee tile, preventing it from moving. The game is played by taking turns placing new tiles or moving existing tiles.

Gameplay Overview:

• Players alternate turns. On your turn, you may either:
• Place a new tile from your hand onto the Hive (following placement rules).
• Move an already-placed tile within the Hive. You can only move tiles once your Queen Bee has been placed.
• The 'One Hive Rule' must always be maintained: all pieces on the playing surface must remain connected as a single unit at all times.

Tile Movement Abilities:

Each insect tile has a unique way of moving:

• Queen Bee: Moves exactly one space in any direction along the perimeter of the Hive.
• Spider: Moves exactly three spaces along the perimeter of the Hive.
• Beetle: Moves exactly one space in any direction. A Beetle can also move on top of other pieces, immobilizing the piece it is on. While on top, it moves like a Beetle.
• Grasshopper: Jumps in a straight line over any number of adjacent pieces to the first empty space on the other side.
• Soldier Ant: Moves any number of spaces along the perimeter of the Hive.

Winning the Game:

The game ends immediately when one player's Queen Bee is completely surrounded by other tiles, regardless of their color. The player who surrounded the opponent's Queen Bee wins the game.
