2. Safety Information

WARNING: Read and understand all safety instructions before operating this pump. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, serious injury, or death.

2.1 Electrical Safety

  • Always connect the pump to a properly grounded 115V AC outlet. The pump is equipped with a 3-prong grounded plug for your safety. Do not modify the plug.
  • Do not operate the pump with a damaged cord or plug. If the cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a qualified electrician.
  • Avoid using extension cords. If an extension cord is necessary, use only a grounded, heavy-duty outdoor-rated cord suitable for the pump's electrical requirements.
  • Never handle the pump or plug with wet hands.
  • Keep all electrical connections dry and away from water.

2.2 General Safety

  • This pump is designed for water transfer only. Do not use it for flammable liquids, corrosive chemicals, or liquids containing abrasive particles.
  • Do not run the pump dry. Operating the pump without water can cause severe damage to the impeller and motor.
  • Ensure the pump is placed on a stable, level surface during operation.
  • Keep children and pets away from the pump during operation.
  • Always disconnect power before performing any maintenance or cleaning.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, when operating or maintaining the pump.

4. Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to prepare your Star HPP360 pump for operation.

4.1 Connecting Hoses

  1. Inlet Connection: Attach the supplied 6-foot garden hose to the inlet port of the pump. Ensure a tight, leak-free connection. The pump's connections are male-threaded. If connecting to a female-threaded source, a female-to-female coupler (not included) may be required.
  2. Strainer Attachment: Securely attach the puddle vac strainer to the free end of the inlet hose. This prevents debris from entering the pump.
  3. Outlet Connection: Attach a standard garden hose (not included) to the outlet port of the pump. Direct the discharge end of this hose to the desired drainage location. Ensure the discharge hose is free of kinks and obstructions.

4.2 Positioning the Pump

  • Place the pump on a stable, level surface near the water source.
  • Submerge the puddle vac strainer completely in the water to be transferred. Ensure the strainer remains submerged throughout the operation to prevent the pump from running dry.
  • Position the discharge hose so that water flows freely to the drainage area without creating a hazard.

4.3 Electrical Connection

  • Ensure your hands are dry.
  • Plug the pump's 3-prong grounded power cord into a properly grounded 115V AC electrical outlet.

5. Operating Instructions

Once the pump is set up, follow these steps for operation.

5.1 Priming the Pump

The Star HPP360 is designed to be self-priming under most conditions. However, for optimal performance, ensure the pump casing is filled with water before starting, especially if it has been stored dry. This can be done by pouring water into the inlet port before connecting the hose, or by ensuring the inlet hose and strainer are fully submerged before starting.

5.2 Starting and Stopping

  1. To Start: With the inlet strainer submerged and the discharge hose positioned, plug the pump into the grounded 115V outlet. The pump will begin operating immediately.
  2. To Stop: Unplug the pump from the electrical outlet.

5.3 Puddle Vac Feature

The included puddle vac strainer allows the pump to remove water down to a very low level, making it ideal for drying out flat surfaces like pool covers or basements. Ensure the strainer is positioned flat against the surface to maximize water removal.

5.4 Performance Guidelines

  • The pump can move up to 336 gallons of water per hour.
  • It can lift water from 15 feet below the pump to 25 feet above the pump.
  • Performance may vary based on hose length, diameter, and vertical lift.

6. Maintenance

WARNING: Always disconnect the pump from the power source before performing any maintenance or cleaning.

6.1 After Each Use

  • Flush the pump with clean water to remove any debris or residue.
  • Clean the puddle vac strainer to ensure it is free of obstructions.
  • Wipe down the exterior of the pump with a damp cloth.

6.2 Impeller Inspection and Replacement

The impeller is a wear part and may need periodic inspection and replacement, especially if you notice reduced performance or unusual noises. An extra rubber impeller and gasket are included with your pump.

  1. Disconnect power to the pump.
  2. Remove the screws securing the pump head cover.
  3. Carefully remove the old impeller and gasket. Note their orientation.
  4. Clean any debris from the impeller housing.
  5. Install the new gasket and impeller, ensuring they are seated correctly.
  6. Reattach the pump head cover and tighten the screws securely, but do not overtighten.

6.3 Storage

  • Drain all water from the pump and hoses before storing.
  • Store the pump in a dry, frost-free location.
  • Protect the power cord from damage during storage.
