Installation Instructions
This section outlines the general procedure for replacing or installing valve stem packing. Always ensure the water supply to the valve is turned off before beginning any work.
- Turn off the main water supply to the fixture or house.
- Open the faucet or valve to relieve any remaining water pressure.
- Locate the packing nut on the valve stem. This is typically found directly below the handle.
- Using an adjustable wrench, carefully loosen and remove the packing nut.
- Remove the old packing material from around the valve stem. This may require a small pick or screwdriver.
- Take the Danco 80793 Graphite Valve Stem Packing. Cut a length sufficient to wrap around the valve stem multiple times.
- Wrap the graphite packing material snugly around the valve stem in the area where the old packing was removed. Ensure there are no gaps. Typically, 2-3 wraps are sufficient. The material is self-forming and pliable.
- Carefully replace the packing nut over the new packing material.
- Tighten the packing nut by hand, then use a wrench to tighten it an additional quarter to half turn. Do not overtighten, as this can restrict valve operation.
- Slowly turn the main water supply back on.
- Check for leaks around the valve stem. If a leak persists, tighten the packing nut slightly more until the leak stops. If the valve becomes difficult to turn, loosen the nut slightly.

Maintenance
Periodically inspect valve stems for any signs of leakage. If a leak occurs, a slight tightening of the packing nut may resolve the issue. If the leak persists, the packing material may need to be replaced following the installation instructions.
Troubleshooting
Leakage from Valve Stem
If water continues to leak from around the valve stem after installation:
- Ensure the packing nut is sufficiently tightened. Avoid overtightening.
- Verify that the graphite packing material is wrapped snugly and completely around the stem, filling the packing gland.
- Consider adding an additional wrap of packing material if the gap is large.
- Ensure the valve stem itself is not damaged or corroded, which could prevent a proper seal.
Valve Difficult to Turn
If the valve handle is stiff or difficult to turn after installation:
- The packing nut may be overtightened. Loosen it slightly until the valve operates smoothly without leaking.
