4. Operating Instructions

The Medela Symphony breast pump features two research-based pumping programs to mimic infant sucking behavior:

  • INITIATE Program: Designed to stimulate the breast and initiate milk production, mimicking the irregular and rapid sucking of a term-infant in the early days after birth.
  • MAINTAIN Program: Mimics the term-infant's sucking pattern during established lactation to optimize milk output, utilizing 2-Phase Expression® technology (a stimulation phase followed by an expression phase).

To operate the pump:

  1. Plug in the Medela Symphony breast pump.
  2. Press the power button to turn on the pump.
  3. Select the desired program (INITIATE or MAINTAIN) based on your lactation stage.
  4. Adjust the vacuum level using the control knob to a comfortable setting that allows for efficient milk flow.
  5. Follow the instructions in the Breastfeeding Information Guide for recommended pumping durations and frequency.

5. Cleaning and Maintenance

Proper cleaning and maintenance are crucial for hygiene and optimal performance of your breast pump kit. Disassemble all parts that come into contact with breast milk after each use.

  • Washing: Wash all disassembled parts in warm, soapy water. Use a soft brush for thorough cleaning.
  • Rinsing: Rinse all parts thoroughly with clean water.
  • Drying: Air dry all components on a clean towel or drying rack. Avoid using cloth towels to dry, as they may leave lint.
  • Sterilization: For initial use and periodic sterilization, parts can be boiled in water for 5 minutes or sterilized using a steam sterilizer or Medela Quick Clean Micro-Steam Bags.
  • Important Note: Plastic bottles and component parts can become brittle when frozen and may break if dropped. Handle bottles and components with care to prevent damage from mishandling, dropping, over-tightening, or knocking over. Do not use breast milk if bottles or bottle components become damaged.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter any issues with your Medela Symphony Breast Pump Kit, consider the following common troubleshooting tips:

  • No Suction or Weak Suction: Check that all pump parts are correctly assembled and securely connected. Ensure the membranes are flat and undamaged. Inspect the tubing for kinks, cracks, or holes.
  • Low Milk Output: Verify that the breast shield size is correct for you. Ensure the vacuum level is set to a comfortable yet effective level. Consider adjusting pumping duration or frequency.
  • Error Messages on Pump Display: Refer to the Breastfeeding Information Guide for specific error code meanings and recommended actions. For equipment questions or concerns, you may call your local Medela branch.
