3. Preparation

3.1 Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is critical for optimal adhesion and durability of the paint. Ensure the surface is:

  • Clean: Remove all dirt, grease, oil, and other contaminants using a suitable cleaner. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely.
  • Dry: The surface must be completely dry before application.
  • Sound: Remove any loose rust, peeling paint, or flaking material with a wire brush, scraper, or sandpaper. For best results, lightly sand glossy surfaces to create a profile for better adhesion.
  • Smooth: Fill any holes or cracks with an appropriate filler and sand smooth.

3.2 Product Preparation

  • Stirring: Thoroughly stir the paint before and during application to ensure uniform color and consistency. Do not shake.
  • Thinning: If thinning is required for spray application, refer to the product label for specific recommendations. Generally, use mineral spirits or paint thinner sparingly.

4. Application Instructions

Apply when air and surface temperatures are between 50°F (10°C) and 90°F (32°C) and humidity is below 85%.

4.1 Application Methods

  • Brush: Use a high-quality natural bristle brush. Apply in smooth, even strokes.
  • Roller: Use a short-nap roller cover (1/4" to 3/8") for smooth to semi-smooth surfaces.
  • Spray: For airless or conventional spray, follow equipment manufacturer's recommendations for tip size and pressure. Thinning may be required.

4.2 Coating Application

  • Apply a thin, even coat. Avoid over-applying to prevent drips and sags.
  • For optimal rust protection and durability, a second coat is recommended. Allow sufficient drying time between coats as specified on the product label (typically 4-6 hours, but can vary with temperature and humidity).
  • Full cure and maximum hardness may take several days.
