This manual provides essential information for the safe and correct installation, operation, and maintenance of your weatherproof box.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Risk of electric shock. Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.

  • Always disconnect power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before installing, servicing, or removing this product.
  • Ensure all wiring connections are secure and properly insulated.
  • Use only approved electrical components and wiring suitable for the intended application and environment.
  • Do not exceed the maximum voltage or current ratings of the box or any installed devices.
  • Ensure proper grounding of the electrical system. The box includes a ground screw for this purpose.
  • For rain tightness, closure plugs are to be sealed with a silicone sealing compound.

  1. Preparation: Ensure power is disconnected at the main circuit breaker. Gather all necessary tools and materials, including appropriate conduit, wiring, and sealing compounds.
  2. Mounting Location: Select a suitable mounting surface. The box features eight mounting options with detachable lugs for flexible installation.
  3. Secure Mounting: Mount the box securely to the surface using appropriate fasteners through the designated mounting holes. Ensure the box is level and stable.
  4. Conduit Connection: Connect conduit to the 1/2-inch threaded hubs. Ensure all connections are tight and weatherproof. Internal hub threads comply with NEMA requirements.
  5. Wiring: Route electrical wires into the box through the conduit. Make all necessary electrical connections to the devices (receptacles, switches, etc.) that will be housed within the box.
  6. Grounding: Connect the equipment grounding conductor to the pre-installed ground screw inside the box.
  7. Sealing Unused Hubs: Use the provided 1/2-inch closure plugs for any unused hubs. For optimal rain tightness, apply a silicone sealing compound around the plugs as indicated on the box.
  8. Device Installation: Install the electrical devices (e.g., GFCI receptacle) into the box and secure them.
  9. Cover Installation: Attach the appropriate weatherproof cover (sold separately) to the box, ensuring a tight seal with the included gasket.
  10. Final Check: Double-check all connections and ensure the box and cover are properly sealed. Restore power and test the installed devices.

5. Operation

The BELL Hubbell 5333-0 Weatherproof Box functions as a protective enclosure for electrical wiring and devices. Once properly installed with a suitable cover, it safeguards internal electrical components from environmental elements such as rain, moisture, and dust, ensuring reliable operation of the housed electrical devices in outdoor or damp conditions.

6. Maintenance

Minimal maintenance is required for the weatherproof box itself. Periodically inspect the box and its cover for any signs of damage, corrosion, or compromised seals. Ensure all conduit connections remain tight. Clean the exterior with a damp cloth as needed. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the powder-coated finish.

If any damage is observed, disconnect power immediately and replace the affected components to maintain the weatherproof integrity and safety of the electrical system.

7. Troubleshooting

As a passive enclosure, the weatherproof box itself typically does not malfunction. Most issues related to an outdoor electrical installation would stem from improper wiring, damaged components, or compromised seals.

  • Water Ingress: If water is found inside the box, immediately disconnect power. Inspect all seals, gaskets, closure plugs, and conduit connections. Reapply silicone sealant where necessary, and replace any damaged components or covers.
  • Power Loss: If devices within the box lose power, check the circuit breaker. Inspect wiring connections for looseness or corrosion. This is typically an issue with the electrical circuit or device, not the box itself.
  • Corrosion: While the powder-coated aluminum is designed for durability, extreme conditions or damage can lead to corrosion. If significant corrosion is present, the box may need replacement to ensure long-term safety and integrity.

Always ensure power is off before performing any inspection or repair work.
