Sharpening Process:
Step 1: Align the Drill Bit
Insert the drill bit into the chuck. Tighten the chuck just enough so the bit is held snugly but can still slide in and out. This allows for proper alignment.

Figure 3: Proper alignment of the drill bit in the chuck.
Press the alignment button on the sharpener and insert the chuck with the bit. Match the alignment guide on the chuck with the desired angle (1180 or 1350) on the sharpener's tube. Release the alignment button and ensure the bit is touching the drill stop.
Step 2: Sharpen the Drill Bit
Once aligned, insert the chuck into the sharpening port. Apply light pressure into the sharpening hole (not down) and rotate the chuck in a clockwise motion. Ensure the chuck rests firmly against the cam guide as you turn. Continue until the grinding noise subsides, indicating the bit is sharp.

Step 3: Split the Point (Optional)
For enhanced drilling performance and to reduce bit walking, you can create a split point. Do not remove the bit from the chuck after initial sharpening. Align the white line on the chuck with the mark on the splitting port.

Figure 5: Close-up of a drill bit with a newly created split point.
Slowly and firmly push the chuck into the splitting port until it stops. Rotate the chuck one half turn and repeat the push action. Inspect the bit; only minimal sharpening is required for the split point. Do not split the points on masonry bits.

Maintenance
Cleaning Your Drill Doctor:
Your Drill Doctor DD500X is a precision tool and should be cleaned periodically to remove dust and grit that can wear down the ports and chucks. This process takes approximately five minutes and should be done after every 20 bits sharpened.
- Unplug the unit before cleaning.
- Use a dry brush to remove dust particles from around the sharpening wheel.
- Wipe the inside and outside of each port with a dry cloth to remove any grinding dust.
- Alternatively, vacuum each port with a 1-inch vacuum hose.
- Blow compressed air through the chuck from the knob end to remove grinding dust.

Sharpening Wheel Replacement:
Your diamond sharpening wheel will wear down over time and will need to be replaced. To change the wheel, remove the clear cover on the side of the unit. Turn the knob clockwise to loosen and remove the old wheel. Replace with a new wheel and tighten the knob by turning counter-clockwise.
Safety Information:
WARNING: Read and understand all safety operating instructions found in the power tools owner's manual.
Troubleshooting
Bit Not Sharpening Evenly:
- Ensure the drill bit is properly aligned in the chuck and the chuck is correctly seated in the alignment port.
- Verify that the clamp arms are holding the bit in its narrowest width.
- Apply consistent, light pressure into the sharpening hole, not down.
- Ensure you are performing an even number of half-turns during the sharpening process.
Difficulty Creating a Split Point:
- Confirm the bit is not removed from the chuck after initial sharpening.
- Ensure the white line on the chuck is precisely aligned with the mark on the splitting port.
- Apply slow, firm pressure when pushing the chuck into the splitting port.
Unit Not Powering On:
- Check if the unit is properly plugged into a working power outlet.
- Inspect the power cord for any damage.
