Safety Information

Always observe safety precautions when working with batteries. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and gloves. Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent the accumulation of explosive gases. Do not smoke or allow sparks or flames near the battery.

Initial Setup Note: During the first use of this tester, a small amount of smoke and/or a burning smell may occur. This is normal and will cease after a short burn-in period.

Setup and Connection

Before connecting the BT-100, ensure the vehicle's ignition is off and all accessories are turned off.

  1. Connect Positive Clamp: Attach the red (+) clamp to the positive (+) battery terminal.
  2. Connect Negative Clamp: Attach the black (-) clamp to the negative (-) battery terminal. Ensure a secure connection.

Operating Instructions

The BT-100 performs three primary tests: Battery Analysis, Charging System Test, and Starter Motor Test.

1. Battery Analysis

This test determines the battery's capacity, state of charge, and identifies potential electrical drains or charging system issues.

  1. Ensure the BT-100 is correctly connected to the battery.
  2. Perform a 50-amp load test for 6-volt batteries or a 100-amp load test for 12-volt batteries. Refer to the meter for results.
  3. Observe the meter reading to assess battery health.

2. Charging System Test

This test identifies problems with the vehicle's charging system, often indicating a defective alternator.

  1. With the ignition off, connect the positive (red) clamp to the positive (+) battery post.
  2. Connect the negative (black) clamp to the vehicle chassis or engine block.
  3. Start the engine and run it between 1200 and 1500 RPM. Note the meter reading with all electrical accessories off. It should be in the green "OK" band in the "charging system" scale.
  4. With the headlights and blower motor on, the meter should remain in the green "OK" band.

3. Starter Motor Test

This test identifies excessive starter current draw, which can make starting difficult and shorten battery life.

  1. Ensure the BT-100 is correctly connected to the battery.
  2. Attempt to start the vehicle.
  3. Observe the meter reading during cranking to determine if the starter motor is drawing excessive current.

Important: For all tests, do not apply the load for more than 10 seconds to prevent overheating of the tester.

Maintenance

The Schumacher Electric BT-100 is designed for durability. To ensure its longevity and accurate performance:

  • Store the tester in a clean, dry environment when not in use.
  • Periodically inspect the clamps and cables for any signs of wear or damage. Replace if necessary.
  • Clean the exterior of the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives.

Troubleshooting

  • Meter Reads Red or Outside Charging System Zone: If the meter indicates a reading in the red band or outside the acceptable charging system zone during the Charging System Test, this suggests a problem, most likely a defective alternator. Further professional diagnosis may be required.
  • Tester Overheating/Smoking: If the tester becomes excessively hot or smokes during a load test, it indicates the load was applied for too long. Release the load switch immediately and allow the unit to cool down. Ensure load tests do not exceed 10 seconds.
  • Inaccurate Readings: Ensure all connections to the battery terminals or chassis are clean and secure. Loose or corroded connections can lead to inaccurate test results.
