Package Contents

Verify that all components are present before beginning installation. The Auto Meter 4327 gauge kit includes:

  • Gauge head (2-1/16 inch)
  • Mounting bracket with hardware
  • Oil pressure sender (1/8” NPT)
  • 1/4” NPT adapter
  • Light bulb assembly
  • Red and green light bulb covers
  • Installation instructions

Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for accurate readings and safe operation. This gauge is compatible with 12 and 16-volt electrical systems.

  1. Mounting the Gauge: Select a suitable location in your vehicle's dashboard or a gauge pod. Use the provided mounting bracket and hardware to securely fasten the gauge.
  2. Installing the Oil Pressure Sender:
    • Locate an appropriate oil pressure port on your engine.
    • Apply thread sealant to the 1/8” NPT pressure sender threads.
    • If necessary, use the 1/4” NPT adapter to fit your engine's port.
    • Thread the sender into the port and tighten securely, but do not overtighten.
  3. Wiring the Gauge:
    • Connect the sender wire to the appropriate terminal on the back of the gauge.
    • Connect the gauge's power wire to a switched 12V or 16V ignition source.
    • Connect the gauge's ground wire to a reliable chassis ground point.
    • Install the light bulb assembly into the gauge. You may use the red or green bulb cover for desired illumination color. Connect the light's power wire to a switched dash light circuit and its ground wire to chassis ground.
    • Note: You will need to supply appropriate wiring and terminals for these connections, as they are not included in the kit.
  4. Testing: After all connections are made, turn on your vehicle's ignition (without starting the engine) to check for power to the gauge and illumination. Start the engine and observe the oil pressure reading.

Operating Instructions

The Auto Meter 4327 Ultra-Lite Electric Oil Pressure Gauge provides real-time monitoring of your engine's oil pressure.

  • Reading the Gauge: The gauge features an easy-to-read silver dial with a high-contrast orange pointer. The pointer indicates the current oil pressure in PSI (pounds per square inch).
  • Illumination: Traditional incandescent lighting illuminates the perimeter of the dial, ensuring visibility during low-light conditions.
  • Air-Core Movement: Auto Meter's patented air-core electric instruments provide quick and accurate readings, keeping hazardous fluids safely outside the vehicle cabin. The air-core meter movement ensures durability and precision.
  • Normal Operation: Consult your vehicle's service manual for the manufacturer's recommended oil pressure range. Oil pressure typically varies with engine RPM and oil temperature. A sudden drop or unusually low reading may indicate a problem.

Maintenance

The Auto Meter 4327 gauge requires minimal maintenance to ensure continued reliable operation.

  • Cleaning: Clean the gauge face with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the lens or finish.
  • Wiring Inspection: Periodically check all wiring connections for tightness and corrosion. Ensure wires are not pinched or exposed to excessive heat.
  • Sender Unit: Inspect the oil pressure sender for leaks or damage during routine engine maintenance.
  • Bulb Replacement: If the gauge illumination fails, the incandescent bulb can be replaced. Refer to the original installation instructions for access to the bulb assembly.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your oil pressure gauge, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Gauge reads zero or very low pressure
  • No power to gauge
  • Faulty ground connection
  • Sender unit malfunction
  • Wiring issue between sender and gauge
  • Actual low oil pressure
  • Check power supply to gauge.
  • Verify ground connection is secure.
  • Test sender unit (consult a professional if unsure).
  • Inspect wiring for breaks or shorts.
  • Check engine oil level and condition. Consult a mechanic if actual oil pressure is low.
Gauge reads maximum pressure constantly
  • Short circuit in sender wire
  • Faulty sender unit
  • Inspect sender wire for shorts to power.
  • Test or replace sender unit.
Gauge illumination not working
  • Blown bulb
  • No power to light assembly
  • Poor connection to light assembly
  • Replace bulb.
  • Check power supply to the light circuit.
  • Ensure the bulb and socket assembly connections are secure and free of corrosion. (A common issue can be intermittent connections in the light wiring).
Inaccurate or erratic readings
  • Poor ground connection
  • Loose sender connection
  • Electrical interference
  • Faulty sender or gauge
  • Verify all ground connections.
  • Tighten sender unit connection.
  • Ensure wiring is routed away from ignition components or high-current wires.
  • Test components individually or consult a professional.
