4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to convert your Camp Chef propane stove to natural gas. It is recommended to have basic tools such as a Phillips head screwdriver and an adjustable wrench available.

4.1. Prepare the Appliance

  1. Ensure the appliance is cool and disconnected from any gas supply.
  2. Remove the griddle or stove top from the appliance.
  3. Disconnect the propane cylinder and regulator from the appliance.

4.2. Replace Orifices

Natural gas requires larger orifices than propane due to differences in energy output. The kit provides various sizes to match your appliance's burners.

  1. Remove each burner tube by unscrewing the single screw at the end of the tube.
  2. Locate the existing propane orifices. Use the provided orifice tool to carefully unscrew and remove each propane orifice.
  3. Use the thread check gauges to determine the correct thread size for your appliance's orifices (e.g., M6x1.0mm or M6x0.75mm).
  4. Select the appropriate natural gas orifices from the kit based on the thread size and burner type (main or side burners). Natural gas orifices will have a larger opening.
  5. Apply gas-rated pipe sealant (not included) to the threads of the new natural gas orifices.
  6. Thread the new natural gas orifices into place. Tighten them securely using the orifice tool.
  7. Reinstall the burner tubes, securing them with the screws.

4.3. Connect to Natural Gas Supply

  1. Remove the propane regulator from the appliance.
  2. Connect the 10-foot natural gas hose to the appliance's gas inlet. Hand-tighten first, then use an adjustable wrench to secure it firmly.
  3. Connect the other end of the 10-foot hose to your natural gas supply line's quick connect fitting. If your supply line does not have a quick connect, use the provided quick connect adapter and install it onto your gas line according to local codes and instructions.

4.4. Leak Test

After connecting the natural gas line, perform a leak test:

  1. Ensure all appliance control knobs are in the OFF position.
  2. Turn on the natural gas supply.
  3. Apply a soapy water solution to all gas connections. Bubbles indicate a leak.
  4. If a leak is detected, turn off the gas supply immediately and tighten the connection. Repeat the leak test. If the leak persists, do not use the appliance and contact a qualified service technician.

5. Operating Instructions

Once your Camp Chef appliance is successfully converted to natural gas and all connections have been leak-tested, follow these general operating guidelines:

  1. Ensure the natural gas supply valve is fully open.
  2. Open the lid of your appliance (if applicable).
  3. Turn the desired burner control knob to the HIGH position and immediately press the igniter button.
  4. If the burner does not ignite within 5 seconds, turn the control knob to OFF, wait 5 minutes, and repeat the ignition process.
  5. Adjust the flame to the desired cooking temperature using the control knobs.
  6. After cooking, turn all burner control knobs to OFF and close the natural gas supply valve.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your converted appliance:

  • Periodically inspect the natural gas hose for any signs of wear, cuts, or damage. Replace immediately if damaged.
  • Keep the burner ports clean and free of debris to ensure proper flame distribution.
  • Clean the griddle or stove top regularly according to your appliance's specific cleaning instructions.
  • Store the appliance in a dry, protected area when not in use, especially during off-season.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues after converting to natural gas, consider the following:

  • Burner not igniting: Check if the natural gas supply is open. Ensure all connections are secure and free of leaks. Verify that the igniter is sparking.
  • Low flame or insufficient heat: Confirm that the correct natural gas orifices have been installed. Natural gas has lower pressure than propane, so ensure your appliance is designed for natural gas conversion and that the orifices are correctly sized.
  • Gas odor: Immediately turn off the gas supply. Do not operate the appliance. Perform a leak test on all connections. If the odor persists, evacuate the area and contact your gas provider or emergency services.
