Hunter PGV-100G 1-inch Globe Valve Instruction Manual

Model: PGV-100G

Introduction

The Hunter PGV-100G 1-inch Globe Valve is a heavy-duty, high-performance valve designed for residential and light commercial irrigation systems. It features robust construction and reliable operation, ensuring efficient water flow control for your landscape.

Safety Information

  • Always turn off the main water supply before installing or performing maintenance on the valve.
  • Ensure all electrical connections are made by a qualified professional and comply with local codes.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and eye protection during installation and maintenance.
  • Do not exceed the maximum operating pressure of 150 PSI.
  • Keep children and pets away from the irrigation system during operation and maintenance.

Product Overview

The Hunter PGV-100G valve is constructed from durable plastic and features a 1-inch NPT (National Pipe Tapered) inlet and outlet. Key components include a heavy-duty solenoid, rigid diaphragm support, and captive bonnet bolts.

Key Features:

  • High-grade plastic construction for durability.
  • 150 PSI pressure rating.
  • Heavy-duty solenoid for reliable operation.
  • Rigid diaphragm support to prevent stress failure.
  • Captive bonnet bolts and solenoid plunger for easy servicing.

Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your Hunter PGV-100G valve. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Prepare the Site:

Locate the desired installation point, ensuring it is accessible for future maintenance. Dig a trench if necessary for underground installation, ensuring proper drainage.

  2. Turn Off Water Supply:

Before cutting any pipes, completely shut off the main water supply to the irrigation system.

  3. Connect Inlet and Outlet:

The valve features 1-inch NPT (National Pipe Tapered) threaded connections. Apply appropriate thread sealant (e.g., PTFE tape or pipe dope) to the male threads of your irrigation pipes. Thread the pipes into the valve's inlet and outlet ports. Ensure the flow arrow on the valve body points in the direction of water flow. Hand-tighten, then use a wrench for an additional 1 to 2 turns, being careful not to overtighten and crack the plastic.

  4. Wire the Solenoid:

Connect one wire from the valve's solenoid to the common wire from your irrigation controller. Connect the other solenoid wire to the specific zone wire from your controller. Use waterproof connectors (e.g., grease-filled wire nuts) for all electrical connections to prevent corrosion and ensure reliable operation. The solenoid wires are typically red, as shown in Figure 1.

  5. Test the System:

Slowly turn the main water supply back on. Check for any leaks at the connections. Manually activate the valve using your irrigation controller or by turning the solenoid a quarter turn counter-clockwise (if equipped with a manual bleed screw) to ensure it opens and closes correctly. Once confirmed, secure the valve in its position.

Operating Instructions

The Hunter PGV-100G valve is typically operated by an automatic irrigation controller. It can also be operated manually for testing or specific watering needs.

Automatic Operation:

  • Ensure the valve is correctly wired to your irrigation controller.
  • Program your irrigation controller according to its specific instructions to schedule watering times and durations for the zone connected to this valve.
  • The controller will send an electrical signal to the solenoid, opening the valve to allow water flow, and then closing it when the watering cycle is complete.

Manual Operation:

  • Manual Bleed Screw: To manually open the valve, locate the bleed screw on the solenoid (often a small knob or lever). Turn it a quarter turn counter-clockwise. Water will begin to flow. To close the valve, turn the bleed screw clockwise until it is snug. Do not overtighten.
  • Solenoid Activation: Alternatively, you can manually activate the solenoid by turning the entire solenoid body a quarter turn counter-clockwise. This will open the valve. To close, turn the solenoid clockwise until snug.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the reliable operation and extends the lifespan of your PGV-100G valve.

  • Seasonal Inspection: Before the irrigation season begins and after it ends, inspect the valve for any visible damage, leaks, or debris accumulation.
  • Cleaning: If the valve is operating sluggishly or not closing completely, debris may be lodged in the diaphragm.
    1. Turn off the main water supply.
    2. Unscrew the bonnet bolts (they are captive, so they won't fall out).
    3. Carefully lift the bonnet and diaphragm assembly.
    4. Inspect and clean the diaphragm and valve seat for any dirt, sand, or other obstructions.
    5. Reassemble, ensuring the diaphragm is seated correctly and the bonnet bolts are tightened evenly.
  • Winterization: In freezing climates, it is essential to properly winterize your irrigation system, including the valves, to prevent freeze damage. This typically involves shutting off the water supply and draining all water from the system, often using compressed air. Consult a local irrigation professional if unsure.

Troubleshooting

Refer to the following table for common issues and their potential solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Valve does not open.
  • No power to solenoid.
  • Solenoid malfunction.
  • Debris in valve.
  • Manual bleed screw/solenoid closed.
  • Check controller and wiring connections.
  • Test solenoid; replace if faulty.
  • Clean valve diaphragm (see Maintenance).
  • Ensure manual bleed screw/solenoid is in the closed position for automatic operation, or open for manual test.
Valve does not close.
  • Debris under diaphragm.
  • Damaged diaphragm.
  • Solenoid stuck open.
  • Low pressure.
  • Clean valve diaphragm (see Maintenance).
  • Replace diaphragm.
  • Replace solenoid.
  • Check main water supply pressure.
Water leaks from bonnet.
  • Loose bonnet bolts.
  • Damaged O-ring or diaphragm.
  • Tighten bonnet bolts evenly.
  • Inspect and replace O-ring or diaphragm.
Low water flow.
  • Partially closed valve.
  • Debris in valve or pipes.
  • Insufficient main water pressure.
  • Ensure valve is fully open (manual or automatic).
  • Clean valve and check for pipe blockages.
  • Verify main water supply pressure.
