Setup
Attaching the Lens
- Remove the rear lens cap and the camera body cap.
- Align the mounting mark on the lens barrel with the corresponding mounting mark on your camera body.
- Insert the lens into the camera mount and rotate it clockwise (for Sony A-mount) until it clicks into place. Ensure the lens is securely locked.
Detaching the Lens
- While holding down the lens release button on the camera body, rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it stops.
- Carefully remove the lens from the camera body.
- Attach the rear lens cap to protect the rear element.
Using the Tripod Collar
Due to its size and weight, this lens is equipped with a tripod collar. Attach your tripod or monopod to the tripod collar mount for better balance and stability, especially during long exposures or when using the lens at its maximum focal length. The collar can be rotated to switch between horizontal and vertical orientations without detaching the camera from the tripod.
Operating the Lens
Focusing (AF/MF Switch)

Figure 2: Detail of the AF/M switch and focus distance scale. The switch allows selection between Autofocus (AF) and Manual Focus (M). The focus distance scale shows distances in feet (ft) and meters (m).
- Autofocus (AF): Set the AF/M switch on the lens to "AF". The camera will automatically focus on your subject.
- Manual Focus (MF): Set the AF/M switch on the lens to "M". Rotate the focus ring to manually adjust the focus. The focus distance scale indicates the current focus distance.
Zooming

Figure 3: Detail of the zoom ring and zoom lock switch. The zoom ring is marked with focal lengths (e.g., 200, 250). The 'LOCK' switch is visible near the 200mm mark.
To change the focal length, rotate the zoom ring on the lens barrel. The lens features a zoom lock switch, typically located near the 200mm mark. Engage the lock switch to prevent the lens from extending or retracting unintentionally, especially when carrying the camera or during transport.
Filter Effect Control (FEC)
The FEC function allows you to rotate a polarizing or graduated filter even when the lens hood is attached. To use this feature, rotate the FEC ring, which in turn rotates the portion of the filter mount where the filter is installed. This eliminates the need to remove the lens hood to adjust your filter.
Maintenance
- Cleaning Lens Elements: Use a lens blower brush to remove dust, then gently wipe with a clean microfiber cloth and lens cleaning solution if necessary. Avoid touching the glass with your fingers.
- Cleaning Lens Body: Wipe the lens barrel with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use organic solvents like paint thinner or benzene.
- Storage: Store the lens in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Use lens caps when not in use. If storing for extended periods, consider a dehumidifying cabinet.
- Avoid Extreme Conditions: Do not expose the lens to extreme temperatures, sudden temperature changes, or excessive moisture.
Troubleshooting
- Lens not attaching to camera: Ensure the mounting marks are aligned correctly and the lens is rotated until it clicks. Check for any obstructions on the lens mount or camera body.
- Autofocus not working: Verify the AF/M switch on the lens is set to "AF" and the camera's focus mode is set to autofocus. Check camera settings for any focus restrictions.
- Images are blurry: Ensure the lens is properly focused. Check for camera shake (use a tripod if necessary). Verify lens elements are clean.
- Zoom ring is stiff: Ensure the zoom lock switch is disengaged. If the issue persists, avoid forcing the ring and consult Tamron support.
