Starrett S828HZ
Starrett Wiggler or Center Finder Instruction Manual
Model: S828HZ
Introduction
The Starrett S828HZ Wiggler/Center Finder is a versatile tool designed for precise machine setup. It allows for accurate location of a spindle relative to a workpiece, essential for correctly making part features such as bolt hole locations. This kit includes the main S828 unit and four interchangeable attachments: Ball Contact 828B, Disc Contact 828C, and Offset Indicator Holder 828D, along with a PT09186 attachment. The unique ball swivel-joint design ensures easy adjustment for true concentricity.
Safety Information
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, when operating machinery or using precision tools.
- Ensure the workpiece and the Wiggler/Center Finder are securely clamped before operation to prevent movement or injury.
- Do not operate the tool at excessive speeds. Refer to machine specific guidelines for appropriate spindle speeds when using center finders.
- Keep hands and clothing clear of rotating parts.
- Store the tool and its attachments in the provided case to prevent damage and maintain accuracy.
- This product may expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

Setup
- Preparation: Ensure your machine spindle is clean and free of debris. Select the appropriate attachment for your specific task (e.g., Ball Contact for general locating, Disc Contact for confined areas).
- Attaching the Wiggler: Insert the shank of the S828 Wiggler/Center Finder unit into the machine's chuck. Tighten the chuck securely.
- Attaching the Contact: The attachments are designed to snap into the chuck of the S828 unit without needing to remove the collet nut. Simply push the desired contact (e.g., Ball Contact 828B) firmly into the chuck until it clicks into place. The ball swivel-joint allows for angular adjustment.
- Initial Alignment: Before use, ensure the contact is as concentric as possible. This can be done by gently tapping the contact while the spindle is rotating at a low speed until the tip runs true.
Operating Instructions
General Operation Principles:
The Wiggler/Center Finder is used to accurately locate the center of a machine spindle relative to a workpiece edge, hole, or feature. This is achieved by bringing the rotating contact into gentle touch with the feature and observing its movement.
Using the Ball Contact 828B:
The Ball Contact 828B, with its 0.250" (6.35mm) diameter ball, is ideal for locating work by bringing the contact against an edge, slot, hole, shoulder, or end. As the spindle rotates, the ball will "wobble" until it makes contact. The center of the spindle is aligned with the edge when the wobble disappears and the ball runs true. For edge finding, the center of the spindle will be half the ball's diameter away from the edge when the contact runs true.
Using the Disc Contact 828C:
The Disc Contact 828C features a small disc at its end (0.100" / 2.54mm diameter), allowing for use in more confined areas such as narrow slots or shallow holes where the larger ball contact might not fit. The principle of operation is similar to the ball contact, where the spindle is aligned when the disc runs true against the feature.
Using the Offset Indicator Holder 828D:
The Offset Indicator Holder 828D is designed to be used with a test indicator (such as a Last Word Test Indicator). This attachment allows for precise measurement of run-out or concentricity in holes or on outside diameters (O.D.s). It can also be used to establish center distances or check the straightness and alignment of flat surfaces. Attach your test indicator to the holder and follow the indicator's instructions for measurement.

Maintenance
- Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the Wiggler/Center Finder and its attachments with a clean, lint-free cloth to remove any chips, oil, or debris. A mild solvent can be used if necessary, ensuring it does not damage the finish.
- Lubrication: Periodically apply a light coat of machine oil to the metal parts to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation of the swivel-joint.
- Storage: Always store the tool and its attachments in the provided protective case when not in use. This protects them from dust, moisture, and physical damage, preserving their accuracy and longevity.
- Inspection: Regularly inspect the contacts for wear or damage. Worn contacts can affect accuracy and should be replaced.
