Setup and Installation

Proper installation is critical for the safety and performance of your 5-point harness. While specific vehicle mounting points vary, the general principles remain consistent.

  1. Preparation: Ensure the vehicle's mounting points are clean, free of debris, and structurally sound. Consult your vehicle's manual for recommended harness mounting locations.
  2. Shoulder Straps: Route the two shoulder straps over the occupant's shoulders. These straps should ideally be mounted to a harness bar or roll cage behind the seat, at or slightly below shoulder height. Avoid mounting points that would pull the straps downwards, compressing the spine in an impact.
  3. Lap Straps: Position the two lap straps across the occupant's hips, ensuring they are snug and low across the pelvis, not over the abdomen. These straps typically mount to reinforced points on the vehicle chassis or seat frame.
  4. Submarine Strap (Anti-Submarine Strap): The single submarine strap passes between the occupant's legs and connects to the central buckle. This strap prevents the occupant from sliding forward under the lap belt in a frontal impact. It should be mounted to a point directly beneath the occupant, or slightly forward.
  5. Connecting the Buckle: Insert all five straps (two shoulder, two lap, one submarine) into the central quick-release buckle until they click securely into place.
  6. Adjustments: Once all straps are connected, adjust each strap individually to achieve a snug fit. There should be no slack in any strap. The harness should hold the occupant firmly against the seat.

Operating the Harness

To properly use your RCI 5-Point Harness:

  1. Sit firmly in the seat.
  2. Bring the two shoulder straps over your shoulders, the two lap straps across your hips, and the submarine strap between your legs.
  3. Insert all five metal tabs into the central quick-release buckle until you hear a distinct click for each, ensuring they are fully engaged.
  4. Pull on the free ends of each strap to remove any slack. The harness should be snug against your body, preventing excessive movement.
  5. To release the harness, press the red button or lift the lever on the central buckle. All five straps will release simultaneously.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance extends the life and ensures the safety of your harness.

  • Cleaning: The manufacturer recommends Hand Wash Only for the fabric straps. Use mild soap and cold water. Do not use harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive cleaners. Allow to air dry completely away from direct sunlight or heat.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect all straps, buckles, adjusters, and mounting hardware for signs of wear, cuts, fraying, deformation, or corrosion.
  • Storage: Store the harness in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and corrosive substances when not in use.
  • Post-Impact: If the harness has been subjected to a significant impact or accident, it must be replaced immediately, even if no visible damage is apparent. Internal structural integrity may be compromised.
