Setup

1. Connecting the Drive

  1. Connect the power adapter to the drive's power input and then to an electrical outlet.
  2. Connect one end of the USB 2.0 cable or FireWire cable to the corresponding port on the external hard drive.
  3. Connect the other end of the cable to an available USB 2.0 or FireWire port on your computer.
  4. Power on the external hard drive. Your computer should detect the new hardware automatically.

2. Initial Setup and Formatting

The drive is Plug-n-Play. However, depending on your operating system and desired use, you may need to reformat the drive for optimal performance and full capacity utilization. Some drives may come pre-formatted with multiple 32 GB FAT32 partitions, which limits single file size and total usable space on modern operating systems.

For Windows Users:

  1. Right-click on 'My Computer' or 'This PC' and select 'Manage'.
  2. In the Computer Management window, navigate to 'Disk Management'.
  3. Locate the IOGEAR external drive. You may see multiple partitions.
  4. Right-click on each existing partition and select 'Delete Volume' until the entire drive is unallocated space.
  5. Right-click on the unallocated space and select 'New Simple Volume'. Follow the wizard to create a single partition, formatting it as NTFS. Assign a drive letter and a volume label.

For Mac Users:

  1. Open 'Disk Utility' (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility).
  2. Select the IOGEAR external drive from the sidebar.
  3. Go to the 'Erase' tab.
  4. Choose a format like Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and a scheme like 'GUID Partition Map'.
  5. Click 'Erase' to format the drive.

Operating the Drive

Data Transfer

Once the drive is connected and recognized by your computer, you can transfer files by dragging and dropping them to and from the drive's icon in your operating system's file explorer (Windows Explorer or macOS Finder).

Tri-Select Backup Function

The Tri-Select feature, in conjunction with the included Dantz Retrospect Express software, allows for customized backup routines. You can configure the software to perform different types of backups (e.g., full system, specific folders, incremental) and assign them to the physical buttons on the drive.

  1. Install Dantz Retrospect Express from the provided CD or IOGEAR's support website.
  2. Launch the software and follow the instructions to create your desired backup 'prescriptions' or jobs.
  3. Assign these backup jobs to the Tri-Select buttons on the front of the drive within the Retrospect software interface.
  4. Once configured, pressing the assigned button on the drive will initiate the corresponding backup job.

Maintenance

General Care

  • Keep the drive in a clean, dry environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid dropping or subjecting the drive to physical shocks, as this can damage the internal components.
  • Clean the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners.

Heat Management

Ensure the drive has adequate ventilation. Avoid placing it in enclosed spaces or stacking other devices on top of it, which could obstruct airflow and lead to overheating. While designed for optimal cooling, prolonged heavy use in a poorly ventilated area can affect performance and longevity.

Safe Removal

Always safely eject or unmount the drive from your operating system before disconnecting the cable or powering it off. This prevents data corruption and ensures the integrity of your files.

Troubleshooting

Drive Not Recognized

  • Ensure the power adapter is securely connected and the drive is powered on.
  • Check that the USB or FireWire cable is firmly connected to both the drive and the computer.
  • Try connecting the drive to a different USB or FireWire port on your computer.
  • Test with a different USB or FireWire cable if available.
  • Verify in Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (Mac) if the drive appears but is unformatted or has partition issues. Refer to the 'Initial Setup and Formatting' section.

Slow Data Transfer Speeds

  • Ensure you are connected to a USB 2.0 or FireWire 400 port on your computer. Connecting to a USB 1.1 port will result in significantly slower speeds.
  • Avoid running multiple data-intensive applications simultaneously.
  • Check the integrity of your cables. Damaged cables can reduce transfer rates.

Overheating

  • Ensure the drive is placed in an area with good airflow and its ventilation slots are not blocked.
  • Avoid operating the drive in direct sunlight or excessively warm environments.
  • If the drive feels excessively hot, power it off, disconnect it, and allow it to cool down before resuming use.
