4. Setup and Installation

The Kidde KN-COP-IC is a hardwired carbon monoxide detector designed for permanent installation into your home's electrical system.

4.1 Power Source

The primary power source for this detector is 120V AC household electricity. A 9-volt alkaline battery serves as a backup in case of a power failure.

4.2 Mounting

The detector can be installed on a standard single-gang electrical box (up to a 4-inch octagon junction box). Use the provided adjustable mounting bracket for proper alignment. Connect the wiring harness to your home's electrical system according to local electrical codes and the detailed instructions in the full user manual.

4.3 Battery Installation

After wiring, install the included 9V battery into the battery compartment. Ensure correct polarity. The battery provides backup power and must be installed for the unit to function correctly.

4.4 Interconnection

This unit features a smart interconnect system, allowing it to communicate with up to 24 compatible Kidde devices (up to 18 initiating devices). When interconnected, if one alarm activates, all connected alarms will sound. Ensure all interconnected alarms are from the same manufacturer for proper compatibility.

5. Operating Instructions

Your Kidde CO detector provides continuous monitoring and alerts through its digital display and audible alarm.

5.1 Digital LED Display

The digital display shows the current level of carbon monoxide the sensor is detecting, updating every 15 seconds. It also indicates other statuses such as low battery or end-of-life.

5.2 LED Indicators

  • Green LED: Lights constantly when AC power is present. Flashes every 7 seconds when operating on battery backup.
  • Amber LED: Illuminates during a CO incident.
  • Red LED: Flashes in unison with the audible alert during a CO incident.

5.3 Audible Alarm

When carbon monoxide is detected at dangerous levels, the unit will sound an 85-decibel alarm.

5.4 Peak Level Memory

The detector records the highest CO level measured since the last reset. This feature can be accessed by pressing the 'Peak Level' button.

5.5 Test/Reset Button

Press and hold this button to test the alarm's functionality. During an alarm, pressing this button will silence the alarm temporarily.

5.6 Smart-Hush Button

This feature allows you to temporarily silence the alarm for approximately 8 minutes, useful for nuisance alarms caused by temporary, non-hazardous conditions.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures your CO detector remains functional and provides reliable protection.

6.1 Battery Replacement

The 9V backup battery should be replaced annually or when the unit indicates a low battery condition. Refer to the full manual for specific instructions on accessing the battery compartment.

6.2 Testing the Detector

Test your CO detector weekly by pressing the Test/Reset button. The alarm should sound, and the digital display should show a test sequence. If the alarm does not sound, refer to the troubleshooting section.

6.3 End-of-Life Indication

The Kidde KN-COP-IC has a 7-year operating life. After this period, the unit will display "END" and chirp to indicate it needs replacement. This is a critical safety feature, and the entire unit must be replaced when this occurs.

Figure 6: The detector displaying "END" on its screen, signaling that the unit has reached the end of its operational lifespan and requires replacement.

7. Troubleshooting

If your detector is not functioning as expected, consider the following common issues:

  • Intermittent Chirping: Often indicates a low battery. Replace the 9V battery.
  • False Alarms: May be caused by temporary exposure to high levels of CO from sources like vehicle exhaust or certain cleaning products. Ventilate the area and use the Smart-Hush button if appropriate.
  • No Power: Ensure the unit is properly connected to the 120V AC power supply. Check circuit breakers.
  • "END" Display: The unit has reached its end-of-life and must be replaced.
