Setup and Installation

The Kato HO #4 Manual Left-Hand Turnout is designed for easy integration into your HO-gauge Unitrack layout. No complex assembly is required for the turnout itself, as it comes as a complete unit.

Unpacking

  • Carefully remove the turnout from its packaging.
  • Inspect the turnout for any visible damage during transit. If damage is found, contact your retailer.
  • Confirm that all included components, such as any installation hardware, are present.

Placement on Layout

  1. Identify the desired location on your model railroad layout where a left-hand track divergence is needed.
  2. Ensure the track sections leading to and from the turnout are clean and free of debris.
  3. Connect the turnout to existing Kato Unitrack sections by aligning the track joiners and pressing them firmly together until they click into place. Ensure a secure and level connection.
  4. Verify that the turnout sits flat on the layout surface to prevent derailments.

Operating the Manual Turnout

This turnout features a manual operation mechanism. It does not require electrical power for switching track direction.

Switching Track Direction

  • To change the direction of the track, locate the manual switch lever on the side of the turnout.
  • Gently push the lever to the desired position. The points (movable rails) will shift to align with either the straight or diverging track.
  • Ensure the points are fully seated against the stock rails in the selected position before running trains over the turnout. Incomplete seating can cause derailments.

Note: Some initial resistance may be felt when operating a new turnout. This is normal and typically eases with use.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures reliable operation and extends the lifespan of your Kato turnout.

Cleaning

  • Keep the track rails and the moving points of the turnout clean. Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a specialized track cleaning tool.
  • Remove any dust, debris, or loose fibers that may accumulate around the points or the switch mechanism.
  • Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the plastic components or track finish.

Inspection

  • Periodically inspect the turnout for any loose connections, bent rails, or damaged plastic parts.
  • Ensure the track joiners are securely connected to adjacent track sections.

Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your manual turnout.

Derailments on Turnout

  • Issue: Trains derail when passing over the turnout.
  • Solution:
    1. Ensure the manual switch lever is fully engaged in either the straight or diverging position, and the points are tightly against the stock rails.
    2. Check for any debris lodged between the points and the stock rails.
    3. Verify that the turnout is sitting flat and level on the layout surface.
    4. Inspect the wheels of your rolling stock for cleanliness and proper gauge.

Stiff Switch Lever

  • Issue: The manual switch lever is difficult to move.
  • Solution:
    1. This can be normal for new turnouts and may ease with use.
    2. Ensure no foreign objects are obstructing the lever's movement.
    3. Do not force the lever, as this may cause damage.
