Preparation
Before beginning any grinding or lapping operation, ensure all components are thoroughly cleaned. Remove any existing carbon, gum, or corrosion. For valve grinding, ensure the valve stem is lubricated to prevent scoring during the process.

Operating Instructions: Valve Grinding
- Apply Compound: Apply a small amount of Permatex Valve Grinding Compound to the face of the valve. Spread it evenly around the valve face. Avoid applying too much compound to prevent slinging during operation.
- Insert Valve: Carefully insert the lubricated valve into its corresponding valve guide in the cylinder head.
- Grind Valve: Using a valve lapping tool (or a drill at medium to low speed attached to the valve stem), rotate the valve back and forth against its seat. The compound will initially feel coarse and then become smoother as the grinding progresses.
- Inspect Valve and Seat: Periodically remove the valve and inspect both the valve face and the valve seat for an even, consistent mating surface. The compound starts as a coarse 120 grit and grinds down to a fine 220 grit.
- Repeat if Necessary: Continue the grinding process until the desired mating surface results are obtained. If the compound becomes too thick, add a few drops of water to thin it.
- Clean Thoroughly: After achieving the desired finish, clean all excess compound from the valve and the cylinder head thoroughly before assembly. Ensure no abrasive particles remain.
Note: The goal is to achieve a uniform, dull gray band around the valve face and seat, indicating a proper seal.
Operating Instructions: Flywheel Seating
The Permatex Valve Grinding Compound can also be used to scuff up and mate flywheels for improved seating.
- Prepare Surfaces: Ensure the flywheel and crankshaft mating surfaces are clean and free of debris.
- Apply Compound: Apply a thin, even layer of the grinding compound to the mating surface of the flywheel.
- Seat Flywheel: Carefully place the flywheel onto the crankshaft.
- Rotate and Mate: Rotate the flywheel back and forth against the crankshaft surface. This action will scuff the surfaces, allowing them to mate properly.
- Clean Thoroughly: Once a satisfactory mating surface is achieved, thoroughly clean all compound from both the flywheel and crankshaft before final assembly.
Maintenance
After each use, ensure the cap is securely replaced on the tube to prevent the compound from drying out. Store the tube in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Proper storage will maintain the compound's consistency and effectiveness for future use.
Troubleshooting
Compound is too thick:
If the compound becomes too thick or difficult to spread, add a few drops of water and mix thoroughly to achieve the desired paste consistency.
Uneven grinding results:
Ensure consistent pressure and rotation when grinding. If using a manual lapping tool, vary the rotation direction. If using a drill, maintain a medium to low speed and avoid excessive pressure, which can lead to uneven wear.
Compound not cutting effectively:
Verify that the surfaces are clean before applying the compound. Excessive oil, grease, or debris can reduce the compound's abrasive action. Ensure sufficient compound is applied to the contact area.
