Setup Guide
1. Unpacking and Contents
Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Ensure the following items are present:
- Sony RDR-GX300 DVD Recorder/Player unit
- Remote control
- Remote control batteries (2 AA)
- Stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable
- RF coaxial video cable
- User's manual (this document)
2. Connecting to a Television
Connect the DVD recorder to your television using the appropriate cables. For optimal picture quality, use component video connections if your TV supports them. Alternatively, use the composite video cable provided.
- Composite Video Connection: Connect the yellow video cable from the DVD recorder's VIDEO OUT jack to the VIDEO IN jack on your TV. Connect the red and white audio cables from the DVD recorder's AUDIO OUT (L/R) jacks to the AUDIO IN (L/R) jacks on your TV.
- RF Coaxial Connection: Connect the RF coaxial cable from the DVD recorder's RF OUT jack to the antenna/cable input on your TV. This connection provides both video and audio signals.
- Power Connection: Plug the power cord into an AC outlet after all other connections are made.
3. Connecting to a Cable Box or Satellite Receiver
To record programs from a cable box or satellite receiver, connect the audio/video output of your set-top box to the audio/video input of the RDR-GX300. The unit includes an IR blaster for controlling your set-top box, allowing for simplified timer recording.
- Connect the video output (e.g., composite video) from your cable/satellite box to the VIDEO IN jack on the DVD recorder.
- Connect the audio outputs (L/R) from your cable/satellite box to the AUDIO IN (L/R) jacks on the DVD recorder.
- Refer to the on-screen display (GUI) for setting up the IR blaster and programming your cable/satellite box for timer recording.
Operating Instructions
1. Basic Playback
- Turn on the DVD recorder and your television.
- Insert a DVD disc into the disc tray.
- Select the correct input on your television to view the DVD recorder's output.
- The disc should begin playing automatically or display a menu. Use the remote control to navigate menus and control playback.
The RDR-GX300 features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, which enhances picture quality for a clearer viewing experience, especially on high-definition televisions. A 12-bit/108 MHz video D/A converter and 192 kHz/24-bit audio decoding ensure high-fidelity output.
2. Recording Programs
The RDR-GX300 supports recording to DVD+RW/+R and DVD-RW/-R discs. Ensure you use compatible discs for recording.
- Insert a Recordable Disc: Place a blank recordable DVD into the disc tray.
- Select Input Source: Use the input selector on the remote or the unit to choose the source you wish to record (e.g., Line 1 for a connected cable box).
- Start Recording: Press the RECORD button on the remote control or the unit. The recording indicator will illuminate.
- Stop Recording: Press the STOP button to end the recording.
3. Timer Recording with VCR Plus+
VCR Plus+ simplifies scheduling recordings of television programs. You can program the recorder using PlusCode numbers found in TV listings.
- Access the timer recording menu via the on-screen display (GUI).
- Enter the PlusCode for the desired program.
- Confirm the recording settings (date, time, channel, disc type).
- Ensure the IR blaster is correctly positioned and configured to control your cable/satellite box for automatic channel tuning.
4. Advanced Recording Features
- Chasing Playback: While a program is still recording (DVD-RW VR Mode only), you can begin watching the recorded portion from the beginning. This allows you to catch up to live broadcast without interrupting the recording.
- Simultaneous Recording and Playback: In DVD-RW VR mode, you can watch previously recorded content on the same disc while new content is being recorded.
- Video Enhancement: The RDR-GX300 incorporates Time Base Correction, pre-frame noise reduction, and pre-video equalizer technologies to improve the quality of the source video before it is recorded.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning the Unit
- Wipe the exterior of the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring powder, or solvents such as alcohol or benzene.
- Ensure the unit is unplugged from the power outlet before cleaning.
2. Disc Handling and Care
- Hold discs by their edges to avoid fingerprints on the recording surface.
- Clean discs with a soft, lint-free cloth, wiping gently from the center outwards.
- Store discs in their cases away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Do not use adhesive labels or write on the recording surface of discs.
Troubleshooting

No Power / Unit Does Not Turn On

Recording Fails or Does Not Start
- Confirm that a blank, recordable disc is inserted and that it is compatible (DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW).
- Ensure the input source is correctly selected.
- For timer recordings, verify that the VCR Plus+ settings are correct and that the IR blaster is properly configured and functioning to change channels on your set-top box.
- Check if the disc has sufficient free space for the recording.
