MOOG MF-101
Moog MF101 Moogerfooger Low Pass Filter Effects Pedal User Manual
Model: MF-101
Introduction
The Moog MF101 Moogerfooger Low Pass Filter is a classic analog effects pedal designed for use with guitar, bass, and synthesizers. It is a direct descendant of the original Moog modular synthesizers, incorporating a voltage-controlled lowpass filter and an envelope follower. This manual provides essential information for setting up, operating, and maintaining your MF101.

Setup
Before operating your Moog MF101, ensure all connections are secure and correct.
1. Power Connection
- Connect the provided 110V AC power adapter to the power input jack on the rear panel of the MF101.
- Plug the power adapter into a suitable electrical outlet.
- Ensure the power source matches the pedal's voltage requirements to prevent damage.
2. Audio Connections
- Use standard 1/4-inch audio cables for all audio connections.
- Connect your instrument (guitar, bass, synthesizer) to the AUDIO INPUT jack.
- Connect the AUDIO OUTPUT jack to your amplifier, mixer, or next effect pedal in your signal chain.
3. Optional Control Voltage (CV) / Expression Pedal Connections
The MF101 allows for external control of its parameters using expression pedals or control voltage sources. Refer to the Moog website or full product manual for detailed information on CV inputs.
Operating the MF101
The Moog MF101 features intuitive controls for shaping your sound. Understanding each parameter is key to unlocking its full potential.
Core Functionality: Low Pass Filter
A lowpass filter removes high frequencies from a tone, making it sound more mellow or muted. The lower the cutoff frequency, the more muted the tone becomes. The MF101's filter is also resonant, meaning that as you increase the resonance, overtones near the cutoff frequency are boosted, creating the classic Moog filter sound.
Core Functionality: Envelope Follower
The envelope follower tracks the loudness contour (envelope) of an incoming sound and generates a voltage that mirrors the dynamics of your playing. This voltage can then be used to automatically control the filter's cutoff frequency. The harder you play, the higher the envelope voltage, allowing you to "play" the filter dynamically with your instrument.
Controls Overview
- CUTOFF Rotary Control: Adjusts the frequency at which the lowpass filter begins to attenuate higher frequencies. Range from 20 Hz to 12 kHz.
- RESONANCE Rotary Control: Controls the amount of emphasis applied to frequencies around the cutoff point. Higher settings create a more pronounced, "resonant" sound.
- 2-POLE / 4-POLE Switch: Selects the filter's slope. 2-Pole provides a gentler roll-off (12dB/octave), while 4-Pole offers a steeper roll-off (24dB/octave) for a more dramatic filtering effect.
- ENVELOPE AMOUNT Rotary Control: Determines how much the envelope follower's voltage affects the filter's cutoff frequency.
- SMOOTH / FAST Switch: Adjusts the response time of the envelope follower. "Smooth" provides a slower, more gradual response, while "Fast" offers a quicker, more immediate reaction to dynamics.
- MIX Rotary Control: Blends the dry (unfiltered) signal with the wet (filtered) signal. Turn clockwise for more filtered sound, counter-clockwise for more dry signal.
- DRIVE Rotary Control: Adds analog distortion to the input signal before it enters the filter. This can add warmth, grit, or aggressive saturation.
- LEVEL Indicator: Illuminates to show the input signal level.
- ENV Indicator: Illuminates to show the activity of the envelope follower.
- BYPASS Indicator: Illuminates when the effect is bypassed (true bypass).
- Footswitch: Toggles the effect on and off.
Maintenance
Proper care will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Moog MF101.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the exterior of the pedal. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents, which can damage the finish.
- Storage: Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and excessive humidity.
- Connections: Periodically check all cable connections for wear and tear. Replace damaged cables to ensure proper signal integrity.
- Power: Always use the specified power adapter. Disconnect power when the pedal is not in use for extended periods.
