5. Setup
Follow these steps to set up your Ultralink Pro MX882:
- Rack Mounting: If desired, mount the MX882 into a standard 19-inch equipment rack using appropriate rack screws. Ensure sufficient space for ventilation.
- Power Connection: Connect the supplied AC power cable to the power inlet on the rear panel and then to a suitable power outlet. Do not power on the unit yet.
- Audio Connections: Connect your audio sources (e.g., mixers, instruments, playback devices) to the desired input channels on the rear panel using XLR or 1/4-inch TRS cables. Connect your audio destinations (e.g., amplifiers, recording interfaces, other mixers) to the corresponding output channels.
- Initial Settings: Ensure all LEVEL controls on the front panel are set to their minimum position.
- Power On: Turn on the MX882 using the POWER switch on the front panel.
- System Power Up: Power on your connected audio equipment, typically starting with sources and ending with amplifiers/monitors.
6. Operating Modes
The MX882 offers flexible operation as either a mixer or a splitter, with each channel configurable independently.
6.1. Mixer Mode (8 In / 2 Out)
In mixer mode, the MX882 combines up to eight mono input signals into a stereo output. This is ideal for sub-mixing multiple sources before sending them to a main mixer or recording device.
- Set the SPLIT/MIX switch for each desired channel to the 'MIXER' position.
- Connect your mono audio sources to the individual channel inputs (CH 1 IN to CH 8 IN) on the rear panel.
- Adjust the LEVEL control for each channel to achieve the desired input gain.
- Use the LEFT/RIGHT BALANCE/PAN control to position each channel within the stereo field.
- The combined stereo signal will be available at the MAIN OUT L and MAIN OUT R connections. Adjust the MAIN OUTPUT LEVEL as needed.
6.2. Splitter Mode (2 In / 8 Out)
In splitter mode, the MX882 takes a stereo input signal and distributes it to up to eight individual mono outputs. This is useful for sending a main mix to multiple amplifiers, recording devices, or monitor systems.
- Set the SPLIT/MIX switch for each desired channel to the 'SPLITTER' position.
- Connect your stereo audio source to the MAIN IN L and MAIN IN R connections on the rear panel.
- Adjust the MAIN INPUT LEVEL to set the overall input gain.
- Each channel's output (CH 1 OUT to CH 8 OUT) will receive a mono sum of the main stereo input.
- Use the LEVEL control for each channel to adjust its individual output level.
- The LEFT/RIGHT BALANCE/PAN control in splitter mode allows you to select whether the channel receives the left, right, or a sum of both main inputs.
6.3. Level Matching Amplifier / DI Box (6 In / 6 Out)
The MX882 can also function as a level matching amplifier or a direct inject (DI) box, converting signal levels between -10 dBV (consumer level) and +4 dBu (professional level).
- This functionality is inherent in the design, allowing you to connect devices with different nominal operating levels without signal degradation.
- By using individual channels, you can convert unbalanced signals to balanced, or vice-versa, and adjust levels precisely.
7. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your MX882.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Ventilation: Ensure that the ventilation openings are free from dust and debris.
- Connections: Periodically check all cable connections for secure fit and signs of wear.
- Storage: If storing the unit for an extended period, disconnect it from power and store in a dry, dust-free environment.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your MX882, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:
- No Power:
- Check if the power cable is securely connected to both the unit and the power outlet.
- Ensure the power outlet is functional.
- Verify the POWER switch on the front panel is in the 'ON' position.
- No Sound Output:
- Check all audio cable connections.
- Ensure the LEVEL controls for the relevant channels and main outputs are not set to minimum.
- Verify the SPLIT/MIX switches are set correctly for your desired operation (mixer or splitter).
- Check the input and output levels of connected external equipment.
- Observe the LED meters for signal presence.
- Distorted Sound:
- Reduce the LEVEL controls on the MX882 and/or the output levels of your source equipment to prevent clipping (indicated by red LEDs).
- Ensure all cables are in good condition and correctly connected.
- Hum or Noise:
- Ensure all connections are balanced where possible (using XLR or TRS cables).
- Check for ground loops. Try connecting all audio equipment to the same power strip.
- Keep audio cables away from power cables.
If the issue persists, contact Behringer customer support or a qualified service technician.
