Introduction

The BOSS OD-3 Overdrive Pedal is designed to provide guitarists with a greatly expanded range of smooth overdrive tones and improved response. Built in the tradition of legendary BOSS overdrives, the OD-3 delivers dynamic, non-muffled tones reminiscent of classic overdriven stack amplifiers, offering a level of sustain and compression unmatched by previous overdrive pedals.

Important Safety Information

• Power Supply: Use only the specified power adapter or a fresh 9V battery. Do not mix battery types or old and new batteries. Remove the battery if the unit will not be used for an extended period.
• Liquid: Do not expose the unit to rain, moisture, or any liquids. If liquid enters the unit, discontinue use immediately and consult qualified service personnel.
• Placement: Avoid placing the unit in direct sunlight, near heat sources, or in extremely humid or dusty environments. Ensure proper ventilation.
• Handling: Do not drop or subject the unit to strong impacts. Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the unit. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.
• Connections: Always turn off the power to all connected equipment before making any connections to prevent damage to the unit or other devices.

Setup

Unpacking

Carefully remove the OD-3 pedal from its packaging. Ensure all components are present and undamaged.

Power Supply

The OD-3 can be powered by a 9V battery or an optional AC adapter (BOSS PSA series recommended). A 9V battery is included with the pedal.

• Battery Installation: To install the battery, loosen the thumbscrew on the front of the pedal and open the pedal. Insert a 9V battery into the battery compartment, ensuring correct polarity. Close the pedal and tighten the thumbscrew.
• AC Adapter: If using an AC adapter, connect it to the DC IN jack on the rear of the pedal. Using an AC adapter automatically disconnects the internal battery.

Connecting the Pedal

Connect your guitar to the INPUT jack on the right side of the pedal. Connect the OUTPUT jack on the left side of the pedal to your amplifier's input. Ensure all cables are securely connected.

• LEVEL Knob: Adjusts the overall output volume of the effect. Turn clockwise to increase volume, counter-clockwise to decrease.
• TONE Knob: Controls the tonal character of the overdrive. Turn clockwise for brighter tones, counter-clockwise for warmer, darker tones.
• DRIVE Knob: Determines the amount of overdrive (gain). Turn clockwise for more distortion and sustain, counter-clockwise for cleaner, milder overdrive.
• CHECK Indicator: This LED illuminates when the effect is active. It also serves as a battery check indicator; if it dims or does not light when the effect is on, the battery is low and needs replacement.

Basic Usage

1. Ensure your guitar and amplifier are connected to the pedal.
2. Press the pedal's footswitch to activate the overdrive effect. The CHECK indicator will light up.
3. Adjust the DRIVE knob to set the desired amount of overdrive.
4. Use the TONE knob to fine-tune the brightness or warmth of your sound.
5. Adjust the LEVEL knob to balance the volume of the effected sound with your bypassed (clean) sound.
6. Press the footswitch again to bypass the effect. The CHECK indicator will turn off.

Achieving Different Tones

The OD-3 offers a wide range of overdrive possibilities. Experiment with the control knobs to discover various sounds:

• Mild Overdrive: Set DRIVE low, TONE around noon, and LEVEL to taste. This provides a subtle boost and warmth.
• Classic Rock Crunch: Increase DRIVE to mid-levels, adjust TONE for presence, and set LEVEL for a powerful rhythm tone.
• Sustained Lead: Maximize DRIVE for rich sustain, adjust TONE to cut through the mix, and set LEVEL for a prominent lead sound.
• Dynamic Response: The OD-3 is highly responsive to your picking dynamics. Play softly for cleaner tones and harder for more aggressive overdrive, even with high DRIVE settings.

Maintenance

• Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents.
• Storage: When not in use for extended periods, remove the battery to prevent leakage. Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
• Battery Replacement: Replace the 9V battery when the CHECK indicator dims or fails to light during operation. Always use a fresh alkaline 9V battery.
