2. Setup

2.1 Power Supply

The CE-5 pedal can be powered by a 9-volt battery or an optional AC adapter (PSA series, sold separately). A 9V (6F22) battery is typically included for initial use. To install or replace the battery:

  1. Loosen the thumbscrew on the front of the pedal and open the pedal cover.
  2. Remove the old battery (if present) and disconnect its snap connector.
  3. Connect the new 9-volt battery to the snap connector.
  4. Place the battery inside the battery compartment and close the pedal cover.
  5. Secure the thumbscrew.

When using an AC adapter, connect it to the DC IN jack. The AC adapter will automatically disable the battery when connected.

2.2 Connections

Ensure all connections are made before turning on your amplifier or other audio equipment.

  • Input: Connect your guitar or the output of another effects pedal to the INPUT jack.
  • Output A (Mono): Connect this jack to your amplifier's input for a mono chorus effect.
  • Output B: For stereo operation, connect Output A to one amplifier and Output B to a second amplifier. This creates a wider, more expansive stereo chorus sound.
  • DC IN: Connect a 9V DC AC adapter (BOSS PSA series recommended) here.

3. Operating the Pedal

The CE-5 features four control knobs to adjust the chorus effect:

  • E.LEVEL (Effect Level): This knob adjusts the overall volume of the chorus effect. Turn it clockwise to increase the effect level, and counter-clockwise to decrease it.
  • RATE: Controls the speed of the chorus modulation. Higher settings (clockwise) result in a faster, more warbling chorus, while lower settings (counter-clockwise) produce a slower, more subtle sweep.
  • DEPTH: Determines the intensity or "depth" of the chorus effect. Turning this knob clockwise increases the perceived thickness and movement of the chorus.
  • FILTER: This unique control allows you to shape the frequency range of the chorus effect.
    • CUT HIGH: Turning the knob counter-clockwise from the center "FLAT" position cuts high frequencies, resulting in a warmer, darker chorus.
    • CUT LOW: Turning the knob clockwise from the center "FLAT" position cuts low frequencies, making the chorus brighter and more defined.
    • FLAT: The center position provides a full-range chorus effect without any frequency cuts.

To activate the effect, press the pedal switch. The CHECK indicator will illuminate when the effect is active. Press the switch again to bypass the effect.

4. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace the 9-volt battery when the CHECK indicator dims or fails to light when the effect is active. Always remove the battery if the pedal will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
  • Storage: Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Jacks and Cables: Periodically check all input and output jacks for debris or loose connections. Use high-quality instrument cables for optimal performance.
