3.1. Prepare for Installation

  • Tools Required: Pencil, drill, jigsaw, screwdriver.

3.2. Cutting the Opening

  1. Attach Template: Secure the provided cutting template to your door at the desired height using tape. Ensure it is level.
  2. Trace and Drill: Trace the outline of the template onto the door. Drill pilot holes in the corners of the traced area, inside the cutting line, to allow for the jigsaw blade.
  3. Cut Opening: Carefully use a jigsaw to cut along the traced line. Ensure a clean cut to prevent splintering.

3.3. Installing the Frames

  1. Insert Frames: Place the front frame of the cat door into the cut opening from one side of the door. Align the back frame with the front frame on the opposite side.
  2. Secure with Screws: Use the provided screws to fasten the two frames together. Ensure the screws are tightened securely but do not overtighten, which could crack the plastic.

4. Operating the 4-Way Lock

The PetSafe 4-Way Interior Locking Cat Door features a sliding lock mechanism located at the bottom of the flap. This mechanism allows you to control your cat's access with four distinct settings:

  • 1. Unlocked (In & Out): The cat can enter and exit freely.
  • 2. Locked (No In or Out): The cat cannot enter or exit.
  • 3. In Only: The cat can enter but cannot exit.
  • 4. Out Only: The cat can exit but cannot enter.

Adjust the slider to the desired position to set the access mode. This allows for flexibility in managing your cat's movement, such as keeping them indoors at night or restricting access to certain rooms.

5. Maintenance

Regular cleaning will help maintain the functionality and appearance of your cat door.

  • Cleaning the Flap: Wipe the translucent flap with a damp cloth and mild soap as needed. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could scratch the plastic.
  • Cleaning the Frame: Clean the plastic frame with a damp cloth.
  • Check for Obstructions: Periodically check the flap and frame for any debris or obstructions that might hinder its smooth operation.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your PetSafe 4-Way Interior Locking Cat Door, consider the following:

  • Cat Hesitation: Some cats may need time to adjust to using the door. Encourage them with treats or by propping the flap open initially.
  • Flap Not Swinging Freely: Check for any dirt, debris, or damage around the hinges or the bottom of the flap. Ensure the locking mechanism is not partially engaged.
  • Door Not Secure: Verify that all screws are properly tightened. If the door was installed on a hollow-core door, ensure the cut was precise and the frames are flush.
