2. Safety Information
Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including eye protection, hearing protection, and a dust mask when operating the router. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped before beginning any operation. Disconnect the power supply before changing bits or making adjustments. Refer to the full safety manual for comprehensive guidelines provided with your product.
3. Setup and Assembly
Motor Unit Overview
The DW618M motor features a 2-1/4 HP, 12.0 Amp electronic variable speed motor. Speed can be adjusted from 8,000 to 24,000 RPM using the dial on the motor unit. It includes a spindle lock button for single-wrench bit changes and a detachable cordset for serviceability and compatibility with different bases.

Attaching the Fixed Base (DW6184)
To attach the motor to the fixed base, align the motor with the base and slide it in until it snaps into place. Secure it by tightening the cam lock lever. Depth adjustments are made using the micro-fine depth-adjustment ring, which allows for precise 1/64-inch increments. This design maintains a constant switch/cordset location when used in a router table.

Attaching the Plunge Base (DW6182)
Before attaching the motor to the plunge base, remove the micro-fine depth adjustment ring from the motor unit. Slide the motor into the plunge base and secure it with the cam lock lever. The plunge base features an adjustable five-position turret stop for repeated plunge cuts and a micro-fine depth adjustment of 5/128-inch per turn. It also includes an integral through-the-column dust collection system.

Attaching the D-Handle Base (DW6183)
The D-handle base offers enhanced control with a trigger switch and lock-on feature. Attach the motor unit to the D-handle base. The power cord from the motor plugs into the D-handle base, and a separate cord from the D-handle base connects to the power outlet. This allows for convenient power control directly from the handle.

4. Operating Instructions
Bit Installation and Removal
- Ensure the router is unplugged from the power source.
- Press and hold the spindle lock button.
- Use the provided wrench to loosen the collet nut.
- Insert the desired router bit into the collet, ensuring at least 3/4 inch of the shank is inserted.
- Tighten the collet nut firmly with the wrench while holding the spindle lock button.
- To remove, reverse the steps.
Speed Control
The variable speed motor allows adjustment from 8,000 to 24,000 RPM. Use the speed dial on the motor unit to select the appropriate speed for your material and bit size. Lower speeds are generally recommended for larger diameter bits and harder materials to prevent burning and improve control.
Depth Adjustment
Fixed Base: Loosen the cam lock lever. Rotate the micro-fine depth-adjustment ring to achieve the desired depth. Each increment on the ring represents 1/64-inch. Tighten the cam lock lever to secure the depth.
Plunge Base: Loosen the plunge lock lever. Use the five-position turret stop for incremental depth settings. For fine adjustments, use the micro-fine depth adjustment knob. Depress the plunge lock lever to plunge the router and release to lock it at the desired depth.
D-Handle Base: Adjust depth similar to the fixed base using the micro-fine adjustment ring.
5. Maintenance
Cleaning: Regularly clean the router and bases to remove dust and debris. Use a soft brush or compressed air. Avoid using solvents that may damage plastic parts.
Collet Care: Keep collets and collet nuts clean and free of debris to ensure proper bit gripping. Replace worn or damaged collets.
Cord Inspection: Periodically inspect the power cord for any signs of damage. Replace immediately if damaged.
Brush Replacement: The motor brushes may require replacement after extended use. Refer to the service manual for instructions or contact a qualified service center.
6. Troubleshooting
Router Not Starting
- Check if the power cord is securely plugged into both the router/base and the power outlet.
- Ensure the power switch on the motor unit (or D-handle base) is in the "ON" position.
- Verify the circuit breaker has not tripped.
Excessive Vibration
- Ensure the router bit is properly installed and tightened in the collet.
- Check if the bit is dull or damaged; replace if necessary.
- Verify the collet and collet nut are clean and undamaged.
Burning Wood
- Reduce the feed rate.
- Increase the motor speed (within recommended limits for the bit size).
- Use a sharper bit.
- Take shallower passes.
