1. Product Overview
The StarTech.com 2-to-1 RJ45 10/100 Mbps Splitter/Combiner is designed to enable two 100Mb network connections over a single 8-wire network cable run. This device is ideal for situations where running additional network cables is not feasible, allowing you to utilize existing cabling more efficiently.
Key Features:
- Enables two 100Mb network connections from a single 8-wire network connection.
- Designed for use in pairs (one at each end of the connection).
- Provides a stable connection for two devices.

2. Important Considerations
It is crucial to understand the intended use of this adapter to ensure proper functionality and avoid common misconceptions:
- Requires a Pair: This adapter must be used in pairs. One adapter is required at each end of the single network cable run. For example, to connect two devices at a destination to two Ethernet ports at a source over one cable, you need two RJ45SPLITTER units.
- Not a Network Switch/Hub: This device is not an Ethernet switch or hub. It does not provide additional network ports from a single source port. It re-routes the internal wiring of an 8-wire Cat5/5e cable to carry two separate 10/100 Mbps connections.
- 10/100 Mbps Only: This splitter supports 10/100 Mbps Ethernet speeds. It will not support Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbps) or Power over Ethernet (PoE) connections, as Gigabit Ethernet requires all four pairs of wires in a Cat5e/6 cable.
- Two Source Ports Needed: You will still need two available Ethernet ports on your network switch or router at the source end to provide connectivity for the two devices at the destination end.
3. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps to properly set up your StarTech.com RJ45 Splitter/Combiner:
- Identify Your Cable Run: Ensure you have a single 8-wire Cat5 or Cat5e Ethernet cable run between your network source (e.g., switch, router) and your destination (e.g., wall outlet, devices).
- Connect First Splitter (Source End):
- Connect two separate Ethernet cables from two available ports on your network switch or router into the two female RJ45 ports of the first RJ45SPLITTER unit.
- Plug the male RJ45 connector of this first splitter into the single Cat5/5e cable run that leads to your destination.
- Connect Second Splitter (Destination End):
- At the destination end of the single Cat5/5e cable run (e.g., from a wall outlet), plug the male RJ45 connector of the second RJ45SPLITTER unit into this cable.
- Connect your two network devices (e.g., computers, printers) to the two female RJ45 ports on this second splitter using standard Ethernet cables.
- Verify Connections: Ensure all connections are secure. The network devices should now receive network connectivity.

4. Operating Instructions
Once properly installed as described in the Setup section, the StarTech.com RJ45 Splitter/Combiner operates passively. It does not require any software installation, drivers, or external power. The splitter simply re-routes the data signals over the existing cable infrastructure.
Ensure that both connected devices at the destination end are configured for 10/100 Mbps Ethernet speeds if they are not auto-negotiating correctly. Most modern devices will automatically detect the correct speed.
5. Maintenance
The StarTech.com RJ45 Splitter/Combiner is a passive device and requires minimal maintenance.
- Keep the device in a clean, dry environment.
- Avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures or humidity.
- Periodically check all cable connections to ensure they are secure and free from damage.
- Clean the exterior with a soft, dry cloth if necessary. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
6. Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your RJ45 Splitter/Combiner, consider the following troubleshooting steps:
- No Connectivity / Only One Device Works:
- Are two splitters being used? This is the most common issue. The adapter must be used in pairs, one at each end of the single cable run. If only one is used, only one of the two connections will function.
- Are both source ports active? Ensure that the two Ethernet ports on your switch/router connected to the first splitter are active and providing network signals.
- Check all cables: Ensure all Ethernet cables (from switch to splitter, the main run, and from splitter to devices) are properly connected and not damaged. Try swapping cables to isolate a faulty one.
- Slow Network Speed (Less than 100 Mbps):
- This splitter is designed for 10/100 Mbps Ethernet. It will not achieve Gigabit (1000 Mbps) speeds. If you require Gigabit, this product is not suitable.
- Ensure your network devices and the main cable run are capable of 100 Mbps.
- Intermittent Connection:
- Check for loose connections at all points.
- Inspect the main Cat5/5e cable run for damage or excessive bends.
- Ensure the environment is free from excessive electromagnetic interference.
- Not Working with PoE Devices:
- This splitter does not support Power over Ethernet (PoE). Do not attempt to use it with PoE-powered devices or PoE-enabled ports.
