1. Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the RCA RP2485 Portable CD/MP3 Player. This device is designed for versatile audio playback, supporting standard audio CDs, MP3, and Windows Media Audio (WMA) formats. It features advanced skip protection, a clear display, and a car kit for on-the-go listening. Please read this manual thoroughly before using your player to ensure proper operation and to maximize your listening experience.

2. Important Safety Information

To ensure safe operation and prevent damage, please observe the following precautions:

  • Hearing Safety: Avoid listening at high volume levels for extended periods to prevent hearing damage.
  • Battery Safety:
    • Use only the specified battery type (AA batteries).
    • Do not mix old and new batteries, or different types of batteries.
    • Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for a long period.
    • Dispose of used batteries properly according to local regulations.
  • Moisture and Heat: Do not expose the unit to rain, moisture, or excessive heat sources.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols.
  • Servicing: Do not attempt to service the unit yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.

3. Setup

3.1 Powering the Unit

The RP2485 can be powered by two AA batteries or via the included car DC power adapter.

  • Battery Installation:
    1. Open the battery compartment cover located on the bottom of the unit.
    2. Insert two AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+ and -).
    3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

    Note: The unit operates for approximately 18 hours on two AA alkaline batteries.

  • Car DC Power Adapter:
    1. Connect the small end of the 4.5V car DC power adapter to the DC IN jack on the player.
    2. Plug the larger end of the adapter into your vehicle's cigarette lighter or 12V accessory socket.

3.2 Connecting Headphones

Plug the included e.clipz clip-on headphones into the headphone jack (marked with a headphone symbol) on the side of the player.

3.3 Using the Car Kit

The car kit allows you to play audio through your car's stereo system.

  • Connect the car cassette adapter cable to the headphone jack of the RP2485.
  • Insert the cassette adapter into your car's cassette deck.
  • Ensure your car stereo is set to the cassette input.
  • Power the RP2485 using the car DC power adapter as described in section 3.1.

4. Operation

4.1 Loading a Disc

  1. Gently press the OPEN button or slide the latch to open the CD compartment lid.
  2. Place a CD (audio CD, MP3 CD, or WMA CD) onto the center spindle with the label side facing up.
  3. Close the CD compartment lid firmly until it clicks.

4.2 Basic Playback Controls

  • PLAY/PAUSE (►/−): Press once to start playback. Press again to pause. Press again to resume.
  • STOP (■): Press to stop playback.
  • SKIP (►► / ◄◄): Press briefly to skip to the next track or previous track.
  • SEARCH (►► / ◄◄ held): Press and hold to fast forward or rewind within a track.
  • VOLUME (+/-): Use the digital volume controls to adjust the listening level (15-grade).

4.3 esp-Xtreme Skip Protection

The player features an electronic skip protection system to ensure smooth audio playback during movement. It provides up to 200 seconds of protection for MP3/WMA files and 45 seconds for standard audio CDs by buffering audio data.

4.4 SmartTrax Navigation (for MP3/WMA CDs)

SmartTrax allows you to navigate and organize your MP3/WMA files by title, artist, genre, or year. The 3-line dot-matrix display will show relevant song data.

  • Use the navigation buttons (refer to your unit's specific button layout, typically labeled MODE or NAV) to browse through categories.
  • Select a category and then use the skip buttons to find your desired song or folder.

Note: The resume feature for playback only works with MP3/WMA files, not with standard audio CDs.

4.5 Digital Bass Boost Surround & Equalization

  • Digital Bass Boost Surround: Press the BASS button (if available) to enhance low-frequency sounds.
  • Equalization Settings: The unit may offer three preset equalization settings (e.g., Pop, Rock, Jazz). Press the EQ button (if available) to cycle through these options.

4.6 Hold Switch

Slide the HOLD switch to the ON position to disable all control buttons. This prevents accidental button presses during transport and helps conserve battery life when the player is stopped.

4.7 Track/Folder Programmability

The RP2485 allows you to program up to 30 tracks or folders for custom playback sequences. Refer to the specific programming instructions in your unit's quick start guide or on-screen prompts.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning the Unit

  • Wipe the exterior of the player with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or strong detergents.
  • For the optical lens, use a specialized CD lens cleaner disc or a soft, lint-free cloth designed for optical lenses.

5.2 Disc Care

  • Handle discs by their edges to avoid fingerprints and scratches.
  • Store discs in their cases when not in use.
  • Clean discs with a soft, lint-free cloth, wiping from the center outwards.

5.3 Battery Replacement and Storage

  • Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display or when playback becomes intermittent.
  • If storing the player for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and potential damage.

6. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your RP2485, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • HOLD switch is engaged.

Disc does not play / "NO DISC" error.
  • Disc is dirty, scratched, or inserted incorrectly.

  • Clean the disc or try a different disc. Ensure label side is up.
  • Verify disc is an audio CD, MP3 CD, or WMA CD.
  • Close the lid firmly until it clicks.
Sound skipping or intermittent playback.
  • Excessive movement.
  • Disc is dirty or scratched.
  • Low battery power.
  • Minimize movement or ensure esp-Xtreme Skip Protection is active.
  • Clean or replace the disc.
  • Replace batteries.
Poor sound quality / Crackling sound with headphones.
  • Headphone connection is loose.
  • Faulty headphones.
  • Disc quality issue.
  • Ensure headphones are fully plugged in.
  • Try a different pair of headphones to isolate the issue.
  • Try a different disc.
