2. Setup
2.1 Unpacking
Carefully remove the typewriter from its packaging. Ensure all packing materials are removed from the unit. Verify that all components, including the power cord, ribbon cassette, and correction tape, are present.
2.2 Power Connection
- Connect the power cord to the power input port located at the rear of the typewriter.
- Plug the other end of the power cord into a standard electrical outlet.
- Turn on the typewriter using the power switch, typically located on the side or rear of the unit.
2.3 Ribbon and Correction Tape Installation
The Brother EM-530 requires a ribbon cassette and a correction tape cassette for operation. Refer to the diagrams inside the ribbon compartment for correct placement.
- Open the ribbon compartment cover, usually located above the keyboard.
- Insert the new ribbon cassette, ensuring it clicks securely into place and the ribbon path is clear.
- Install the correction tape cassette in its designated slot, following the directional arrows.
- Close the ribbon compartment cover.
2.4 Paper Loading
The EM-530 accommodates paper up to 15.5 inches wide.
- Ensure the paper bail rollers are lifted.
- Insert the paper into the paper feed slot at the rear of the platen.
- Rotate the platen knob (on the left side) to feed the paper forward until it is positioned correctly for typing.
- Lower the paper bail rollers to secure the paper against the platen.

3. Operation
3.1 Basic Typing
Once powered on and paper is loaded, begin typing by pressing the desired keys on the keyboard. The EM-530 features a 12-inch writing line.
3.2 Typing Pitches
The typewriter supports four typing pitches: 10 (Pica), 12 (Elite), 15 (Micro), and PS (Proportional Spacing). Select the desired pitch using the dedicated pitch selection keys or menu options, if available on your model.
3.3 Correction Memory
The EM-530 includes a two-line correction memory. This feature allows for easy correction of errors:
- Word-Out: Corrects the last word typed.
- Line-Out: Corrects the entire last line typed.
- Auto Relocate: Automatically returns the print head to the position of the last correction for continued typing.
To use the correction feature, press the dedicated correction key (often labeled 'CORRECT' or 'RELOCATE') after an error. The machine will automatically backspace and lift the incorrect character(s) using the correction tape.
3.4 Spell Checker
Utilize the integrated 90,000-word spell and redundancy checker to assist in typing accuracy. Consult the on-screen display (if present) or indicator lights for spell check suggestions and corrections.
3.5 Auto Formatting Features
The typewriter includes various auto formatting features to streamline document creation. These may include automatic centering, bolding, underlining, and margin setting. Refer to the keyboard labels and display for specific function keys and their operations.
4. Maintenance
4.1 Cleaning
Regular cleaning helps maintain optimal performance.
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior surfaces with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Print Head Area: Gently brush away any dust or paper fibers from the print head and platen area using a soft brush or compressed air. Ensure the typewriter is powered off before cleaning this area.
- Keyboard: Use a soft brush or vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove debris from between the keys.
4.2 Ribbon and Correction Tape Replacement
Replace the ribbon and correction tape cassettes when the print quality deteriorates or the correction tape is no longer effective. Follow the installation steps outlined in Section 2.3.
