  2. Plug the other end of the power cord into a standard electrical outlet.
  3. Turn on the typewriter using the power switch, typically located on the side or rear of the unit.

2.3 Ribbon and Correction Tape Installation

The Brother EM-530 requires a ribbon cassette and a correction tape cassette for operation. Refer to the diagrams inside the ribbon compartment for correct placement.

3. Operation

3.1 Basic Typing

Once powered on and paper is loaded, begin typing by pressing the desired keys on the keyboard. The EM-530 features a 12-inch writing line.

3.2 Typing Pitches

The typewriter supports four typing pitches: 10 (Pica), 12 (Elite), 15 (Micro), and PS (Proportional Spacing). Select the desired pitch using the dedicated pitch selection keys or menu options, if available on your model.

3.3 Correction Memory

The EM-530 includes a two-line correction memory. This feature allows for easy correction of errors:

  • Word-Out: Corrects the last word typed.
  • Line-Out: Corrects the entire last line typed.
  • Auto Relocate: Automatically returns the print head to the position of the last correction for continued typing.

To use the correction feature, press the dedicated correction key (often labeled 'CORRECT' or 'RELOCATE') after an error. The machine will automatically backspace and lift the incorrect character(s) using the correction tape.

3.4 Spell Checker

Utilize the integrated 90,000-word spell and redundancy checker to assist in typing accuracy. Consult the on-screen display (if present) or indicator lights for spell check suggestions and corrections.

3.5 Auto Formatting Features

The typewriter includes various auto formatting features to streamline document creation. These may include automatic centering, bolding, underlining, and margin setting. Refer to the keyboard labels and display for specific function keys and their operations.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning

Regular cleaning helps maintain optimal performance.

  • Exterior: Wipe the exterior surfaces with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Print Head Area: Gently brush away any dust or paper fibers from the print head and platen area using a soft brush or compressed air. Ensure the typewriter is powered off before cleaning this area.
  • Keyboard: Use a soft brush or vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove debris from between the keys.
