2. Design and Optics

The E-20 camera is constructed with a robust cast-aluminum body, providing a professional SLR feel and durability. Its design incorporates a non-removable lens, which is specifically engineered to maximize image sharpness and quality for the digital sensor.

2.1 Lens System

The integrated 4x optical zoom lens covers a focal range equivalent to 35-140mm in 35mm format, with a maximum aperture of f2.0 to f2.4. This lens features aspheric and ED elements, along with a Gauss-type lens group, to deliver high optical performance. For extended versatility, add-on lenses ranging from 28mm to 420mm are available separately.

2.2 Viewfinders and Display

The camera offers two primary methods for composing shots: a traditional ground-glass viewfinder and a swivel-mounted 1.8-inch LCD monitor. A unique beam-splitter system allows both the viewfinder and the CCD sensor to receive light simultaneously. The LCD monitor can be tilted up to 90 degrees or down to 20 degrees, facilitating photography from various angles.

2.3 Image Sensor

Equipped with a 5-megapixel CCD sensor, the E-20 captures images with exceptional detail. The sensor operates as an interlaced chip, reading data in two passes (even and odd rows). To overcome the shutter speed limitation of interlaced scanning, a progressive-scan feature is included, allowing for shutter speeds up to 1/18,000th of a second at a reduced resolution of 2.5 megapixels.

3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation

The E-20 operates on either four AA batteries or two CR-V3 lithium batteries. A set of CR-V3 lithium batteries is typically included. For long-term and economical use, it is highly recommended to use rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) AA batteries.

  1. Open the battery compartment cover located on the bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert the batteries according to the polarity indicators inside the compartment.
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

3.2 Memory Card Insertion

The camera supports both SmartMedia and CompactFlash (Type I and II, including IBM Microdrive) memory cards. It features dual slots, allowing both types of cards to be used simultaneously.

  1. Locate the memory card slot cover on the side of the camera.
  2. Open the cover.
  3. Insert the SmartMedia card into its designated slot until it clicks into place.
  4. Insert the CompactFlash card into its designated slot, ensuring correct orientation.
  5. Close the memory card slot cover firmly.

  • ISO Setting: Choose from 80, 160, or 320.
  • Autobracketing: Capture three consecutive images at different exposure levels (one over, one under, one normal), with adjustable EV steps.

4.3 Flash Operation

The built-in flash offers several modes:

  • Red-Eye Reduction: Fires a pre-flash to minimize red-eye effect.
  • Auto: Flash fires automatically when needed.
  • Fill-in: Flash fires regardless of ambient light, useful for brightening shadows.
  • Off: Flash is disabled.

An external flash can be connected via the hot-shoe on top of the camera for more advanced lighting control.

4.4 White Balance

Ensure accurate color reproduction by setting the white balance:

  • Auto: Camera automatically adjusts white balance.
  • Preset: Select from various Kelvin temperature settings (e.g., Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten).
  • Manual: Create a custom white balance setting based on a neutral gray or white object.

4.5 Focus System

The E-20 features both autofocus and manual focus capabilities. Autofocus modes include Single-Servo AF (AF-S), utilizing Contrast Detection and Live View for precise focusing.

4.6 Storage and Image Review

The camera's dual memory card slots allow for flexible storage. You can toggle between SmartMedia and CompactFlash cards via a menu setting. A 32 MB SmartMedia card can hold approximately 11 pictures at full resolution with normal compression, or two uncompressed TIFF images. For higher capacity, a 256 MB CompactFlash card can store around 80 photos at default settings.

After capturing an image, the histogram function provides instant feedback on exposure, aiding in improving your photographic technique. The camera also features a large internal buffer, enabling continuous shooting of up to four shots at three frames per second, even when recording uncompressed TIFF files.

5. Power Management

The OM SYSTEM OLYMPUS E-20 uses either four AA batteries or two CR-V3 lithium batteries. While CR-V3 lithium batteries offer a long initial life, they are disposable. For sustained use, investing in high-quality rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) AA batteries is strongly recommended to ensure consistent power and reduce operational costs.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your camera.

  • Lens Care: Always keep the lens clean. Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces. Avoid touching the lens glass with your fingers. Use the provided lens cap and lens hood to protect the lens from dust, scratches, and glare.
  • Body Cleaning: Wipe the camera body with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water. Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the camera in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
  • Memory Cards: Handle memory cards carefully. Avoid bending or exposing them to static electricity.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your E-20 camera.

7.1 Slow Image Write Speeds

The E-20, particularly in 5-megapixel mode, may exhibit slower write speeds to the memory card due to its interlaced CCD design and large file sizes. This can be noticeable during rapid shooting sequences.

  • Solution: Consider using high-speed CompactFlash cards for better performance. For situations requiring very fast capture, utilize the progressive-scan mode, which offers a significantly faster shutter speed (1/18,000th of a second) at 2.5-megapixel resolution.

7.2 Rapid Battery Drain

Some users may experience faster-than-expected battery depletion.

  • Solution: Ensure you are using fresh, high-quality batteries. For long-term use, switch to rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) AA batteries, which are more economical and often provide better performance than disposable lithium or alkaline batteries. Minimize LCD screen usage when possible, as it consumes significant power.

7.3 Camera Not Turning On

  • Solution: Check that batteries are correctly inserted and fully charged. Ensure the battery compartment cover is securely closed.

If issues persist after attempting these solutions, please refer to the full user manual or contact OM SYSTEM customer support.
