The Nikon AF FX NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D is a versatile and compact prime lens, known for its fast f/1.8 aperture, which is excellent for low-light photography and achieving beautiful background blur (bokeh). Operating the Lens
Autofocus Compatibility
The autofocus system of the AF FX NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D lens is compatible with select Nikon DSLRs that support D-type lenses and have an internal autofocus motor. For cameras without an internal autofocus motor, this lens will only allow for manual focus.
NOTE: This lens will NOT autofocus with the following Nikon camera models: D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D3400, D3500, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600, D40, D40X, and D60. Users of these cameras must use manual focus with this lens.
Manual Focus and Aperture Control
When using manual focus, rotate the focus ring on the lens barrel to achieve sharp focus. The lens features a clear distance scale to assist with focusing.
The lens also includes an aperture control ring, allowing for manual adjustments of the aperture (f-stop). For cameras that control aperture electronically, ensure the aperture ring is locked at its minimum setting (f/22) to allow the camera to control the aperture. For manual aperture control, unlock the ring and set your desired f-stop directly on the lens.

Focal Length and Usage
This is a fixed 50mm focal length lens. On FX-format (full-frame) cameras, it provides a natural perspective similar to human vision. On DX-format (APS-C) cameras, the effective focal length becomes approximately 75mm (due to the 1.5x crop factor), making it ideal for portraits and tighter compositions.
Maintenance and Care
Cleaning the Lens
- Always use a soft, clean microfiber cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces.
- For dust, use a blower brush to gently remove particles before wiping.
- For smudges or fingerprints, apply a small amount of lens cleaning solution to the cloth (never directly to the lens) and wipe gently in a circular motion from the center outwards.
- Avoid touching the glass elements with your fingers.
Storage
- Store the lens with both front and rear caps attached to protect the elements from dust and scratches.
- Keep the lens in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- If storing for extended periods, consider using a desiccant to prevent mold growth, especially in humid environments.
Troubleshooting
Common Issues and Solutions
- Lens not autofocusing:
Check if your camera model has an internal autofocus motor. Refer to the "Autofocus Compatibility" section in this manual. If your camera does not have a motor, manual focus is required. Ensure the lens is properly mounted and the camera's AF/MF switch (if present) is set to AF. - Images appear blurry:
Ensure the lens is properly focused. If using autofocus, check lighting conditions and subject contrast. If manually focusing, ensure the focus ring is adjusted correctly. Check that the aperture setting is appropriate for your desired depth of field. - Dust or spots on images:
Inspect the front and rear elements of the lens for dust or smudges. Clean the lens carefully as described in the "Maintenance and Care" section. Also, check your camera's sensor for dust. - Lens not attaching securely:
Ensure the lens is aligned correctly with the mounting marks on the camera body. Rotate until a distinct click is heard, indicating it is locked in place. Do not force the lens.
