Product Overview

The Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DL Macro Super Lens is a versatile telephoto zoom lens designed for Minolta AF SLR cameras. It offers a broad focal length range from 70mm to 300mm, making it suitable for various photographic applications, including candid portraiture, sports, wildlife, and scenic details. A key feature of this lens is its macro capability, allowing for close-up photography with a magnification ratio of 1:2 at its 300mm focal length. Constructed with ecological, lead- and arsenic-free glass, this lightweight lens is a reliable addition to any photographer's kit.

Image: The Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DL Macro Super Lens. This black telephoto zoom lens features clear markings for focal length (70mm to 300mm), aperture settings (F4-5.6), and focus distance in both feet and meters. A red ring near the front element indicates its macro capabilities. The lens barrel includes a switch for normal and macro modes, and another for autofocus (AF) and manual focus (M). The lens mount is visible at the rear, designed for compatible camera bodies.

Setup

  1. Attaching the Lens: Align the red dot on the lens barrel with the corresponding red dot on your Minolta AF SLR camera body. Gently insert the lens into the camera's lens mount and rotate it clockwise until it clicks securely into place. Ensure the lens is firmly attached before use.
  2. Detaching the Lens: While holding down the lens release button on your camera body, rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it detaches. Always place the rear lens cap on the detached lens to protect the rear element and electrical contacts.
  3. Filter Attachment: This lens supports 58mm filters. To attach a filter, screw it gently onto the front filter thread of the lens until it is snug. Do not overtighten.

Operating the Lens

  • Zooming: To adjust the focal length, rotate the zoom ring located on the lens barrel. The focal length can be set anywhere between 70mm (wide-angle telephoto) and 300mm (super telephoto).
  • Focusing Modes:
    • Autofocus (AF): Set the AF/M switch on the lens barrel to 'AF'. The camera will automatically focus on your subject.
    • Manual Focus (M): Set the AF/M switch to 'M'. Rotate the focus ring on the lens barrel to manually adjust the focus until your subject appears sharp in the viewfinder.
  • Macro Photography:

This lens features a dedicated macro mode for close-up photography. To engage macro mode, set the 'NORMAL/MACRO (200-300)' switch to 'MACRO'. This mode is most effective at focal lengths between 200mm and 300mm, allowing for a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2 (one-half life-size) and a minimum focusing distance of 59 inches (approximately 1.5 meters).

Note: For optimal macro results, consider using a tripod to minimize camera shake and ensure precise focus.

  • Aperture Range: The lens has a variable aperture of F4-5.6, meaning the maximum aperture changes with the focal length. At 70mm, the maximum aperture is F4, and at 300mm, it is F5.6.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning the Lens: Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth specifically designed for optics to gently wipe dust and smudges from the lens elements. For stubborn marks, use a small amount of lens cleaning fluid applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the lens with both front and rear caps attached in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid storing in areas with high humidity to prevent mold growth.
  • Handling: Always handle the lens by its barrel, avoiding direct contact with the glass elements. Do not apply excessive force when attaching or detaching the lens.

Troubleshooting

  • Autofocus Not Working:
    • Ensure the AF/M switch on the lens is set to 'AF'.
    • Check if the camera body's focus mode is set to autofocus.
    • Clean the electrical contacts on both the lens mount and camera body with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Images Appear Blurry:
    • Verify that the lens is properly focused (either manually or via autofocus).
    • Check your camera's shutter speed; a faster shutter speed may be needed, especially at longer focal lengths (e.g., 300mm) to prevent camera shake.
    • Ensure the lens elements are clean and free of smudges or dust.
  • Lens Not Attaching Securely:
    • Confirm that the lens is compatible with your camera body (Minolta AF mount).
    • Ensure proper alignment of the mounting marks before rotating.
