Safety Instructions
WARNING: Always follow basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury.
- Read and understand all instructions before operating the machine.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including eye protection, hearing protection, and dust masks.
- Ensure the work area is clean, well-lit, and free from obstructions.
- Keep hands clear of infeed and outfeed openings. Always stand to one side of the planer/molder to avoid injury from kickback.
- Disconnect power before making adjustments, changing knives, or performing maintenance.
- Do not operate the machine with damaged parts or if it is not functioning correctly.
- Secure the machine on a stable, level surface.

This label emphasizes keeping hands clear of the infeed and outfeed openings and standing to the side to prevent injury from workpiece kickback. It also highlights the maximum planing thickness of 6-1/8 inches and maximum depth of cut of 1/16 inch.
Setup and Assembly
The JET JPM-13CS planer/molder comes largely pre-assembled. Follow these steps for final setup:
- Unpacking: Carefully remove the machine from its packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage.
- Placement: Position the planer/molder on a firm, level surface. The machine features built-in lockable casters for mobility. Engage the locks to secure the machine during operation.

Figure 3: Detail of the built-in lockable casters. These casters allow for easy movement of the machine within the workshop and can be locked to provide stability during use.
- Table and Base: The sturdy cast-iron table and base provide stability and reduce vibration. Ensure the table is clean and free of debris.

Figure 4: View of the cast iron table and base. This heavy-duty construction contributes to the machine's stability and vibration reduction during operation.
- Dust Collection: Attach a dust collection system to the 4-inch angled dust port. This is crucial for maintaining a clean work environment and optimal machine performance.

Figure 5: The four-inch angled dust port. This design helps keep the dust hose out of the way while ensuring efficient chip and dust removal.
- Electrical Connection: Connect the machine to a suitable power supply. The 1-1/2 HP motor is 115/230V 1Ph and can be rewired for 230V if needed. Consult a qualified electrician for wiring changes.
Operating Instructions
The JPM-13CS functions as both a planer and a molder. Understand the settings and procedures for each operation.
Planing Operation
- Adjusting Cut Depth: Use the top-mounted height adjustment handle to raise or lower the table, setting the desired cut depth. Refer to the metric and inch scales for accuracy. The maximum planing thickness is 6-1/8 inches.
- Feed Rate: For general dimensioning and quick material removal, use the 20 FPM (feet per minute) feed rate. For a smoother finish, select the 10 FPM feed rate.
- Material Feeding: Ensure the workpiece is free of foreign objects. Feed the material smoothly into the infeed rollers. The rubber-covered infeed and outfeed rollers provide consistent stock movement.
- Chip Deflectors: The adjustable chip deflectors help manage wood chips during operation.

Figure 6: Adjustable chip deflectors. These components can be positioned to effectively direct wood chips away from the workpiece and into the dust collection system.
Molding Operation
The JPM-13CS can accommodate various molding knife profiles. The three-piece wedge-shaped gibs allow for easy installation of molding knives without removing the planer blades.
- Knife Installation: Install molding knives (up to 2 inches wide) into the center gib section of the cutterhead.
- Feed Rate: Use the 10 FPM feed rate for molding operations to achieve optimal results.
- Stock Preparation: Ensure stock is properly prepared for molding, typically planed to a consistent thickness first.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your planer/molder.
- Cleaning: Keep the machine clean, especially the table, rollers, and cutterhead area. Remove wood chips and dust after each use.
- Cutterhead Knives: Inspect knives regularly for sharpness and damage. Replace or sharpen dull knives to maintain cut quality. Disconnect power before accessing the cutterhead.
- Roller Adjustment: Periodically check and adjust the infeed and outfeed rollers to ensure proper feeding and prevent snipe.
- Belt Tension: The motor's V-belts should be checked for proper tension. Access the motor and belts via the removable side door.
- Lubrication: Lubricate moving parts as recommended in the full product manual (not provided here).
Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your JPM-13CS planer/molder.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Poor Finish Quality (e.g., chatter, waves) | Dull knives, incorrect feed rate, excessive depth of cut, loose cutterhead. | Replace or sharpen knives. Use a slower feed rate (10 FPM) for finish cuts. Reduce depth of cut. Check cutterhead for tightness. |
| Snipe (uneven cuts at board ends) | Improperly adjusted infeed/outfeed rollers, insufficient support for long workpieces. | Adjust infeed and outfeed rollers according to manual specifications. Use external support rollers for long stock. |
| Material Not Feeding Properly | Worn or dirty feed rollers, incorrect roller pressure, motor belt slippage. | Clean or replace feed rollers. Adjust roller pressure. Check and adjust V-belt tension. |
| Machine Does Not Start | No power, tripped circuit breaker, faulty switch. | Check power connection and circuit breaker. Ensure the start/stop switch is functioning. |
