2. About the Author: Jean-Jacques Sempé
Jean-Jacques Sempé was born in Bordeaux, France, on August 17, 1932. At the age of 17, he worked as a bicycle delivery boy for a wine broker. In 1960, he embarked on the adventure of "Le Petit Nicolas" with René Goscinny, creating an unforgettable gallery of portraits of "awful little rascals who have since populated our imagination" (as Goscinny put it).
His fine, subtle, and allusive humor, combined with a formidable sense of the ridiculous, characterizes his entire body of work. His pen translates his tenderly ironic vision of our flaws and the world's shortcomings. Sempé authored about thirty albums. In 1988, he illustrated "Catherine Certitude" by Patrick Modiano, regularly drew for "L'Express", "Télérama", "The New Yorker", and exhibited his drawings and watercolors in Munich, New York, London, and Salzburg, where he always met with great success. Sempé passed away on August 11, 2022, at the age of 89.
