About the Authors

Kwame Ture (formerly Stokely Carmichael)

Kwame Ture, previously known as Stokely Carmichael, was a prominent and influential leader in the Black militancy movement in the United States during the 1960s. He served as the head of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and later as the prime minister of the Black Panther Party, where he famously coined the phrase "Black Power." In 1969, he disassociated himself from American groups over disagreements regarding alliances with White radicals and subsequently relocated to Guinea, declaring himself a pan-Africanist. In 1978, he adopted the name Kwame Ture to honor African socialist leaders Kwame Nkrumah and Ahmed Sekoe Toure. He resided in Guinea for 33 years until his diagnosis with prostate cancer, passing away in 1998.
