5. Installation Guide

5.1 Physical Installation & Splicing

The TL-M12Q X3 fans feature a wireless splicing mechanism for easy installation and reduced cable clutter.

  1. Prepare Fans: Ensure your PC is powered off and unplugged. Identify the desired location for your fans (case or radiator).
  2. Splicing Fans: To connect multiple fans, align the snap-on splicing structures on the sides of the fans. Gently push them together until they click into place. This creates a secure connection for both power and ARGB signals.
  3. Mounting Fans: Secure the spliced fan unit to your case or radiator using the provided mounting screws. Ensure the airflow direction is correct for your cooling setup (typically intake from front/bottom, exhaust from rear/top).

5.2 Wiring Connections

The modular control cable connects to the spliced fan unit and then to your motherboard.

  1. Connect Modular Cable to Fan: Attach the modular control cable to the designated port on the spliced fan unit. Ensure the connector is fully seated.
  2. PWM Connection: Connect the 4-Pin PWM connector from the modular cable to an available 4-Pin fan header on your motherboard (e.g., CPU_FAN, SYS_FAN). This controls fan speed.
  3. ARGB Connection: Connect the 5V-3Pin ARGB connector from the modular cable to an available 5V-3Pin Addressable RGB header on your motherboard (e.g., JRAINBOW, D_LED, ADD_HEADER). This controls the lighting effects.

Important: The wire of the control line needs to be connected to the fan side with a pin. Please be careful not to connect to the other side to avoid damage.

6. Operation

6.1 Fan Speed Control (PWM)

The fan speed is controlled via the 4-Pin PWM connection to your motherboard. You can adjust fan curves and speeds through your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI settings or dedicated software provided by your motherboard manufacturer.

6.2 ARGB Lighting Control

The ARGB lighting effects are controlled via the 5V-3Pin ARGB connection. You can customize the lighting through your motherboard's ARGB software (e.g., ASUS Aura Sync, GIGABYTE RGB Fusion, MSI Mystic Light Sync, ASRock Polychrome Sync). If your motherboard does not have a 5V-3Pin ARGB header, a separate ARGB controller (not included) would be required.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

Regular cleaning helps maintain optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your fans.

  • Power Off: Always power off your computer and unplug it before cleaning.
  • Dust Removal: Use compressed air or a soft brush to gently remove dust from the fan blades and frame. Hold the fan blades to prevent them from spinning rapidly during cleaning with compressed air, which can damage the bearing.
  • Wipe Down: For stubborn dirt, lightly dampen a cloth with water (ensure it's not dripping wet) and wipe the non-electrical parts of the fan. Allow to dry completely before powering on.

7.2 Bearing Care

The TL-M12Q X3 uses a high-precision S-FDB (Fluid Dynamic Bearing) which is a sealed structure and is maintenance-free. There is no need to add lubricant for maintenance. Do not disassemble the fan, as this may void the warranty and cause damage.

8. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Fan not spinningLoose or incorrect PWM connection
Insufficient power from motherboard header
Fan defect
Check 4-Pin PWM cable connection to motherboard and fan unit. Try a different motherboard fan header. Contact support if issue persists.
ARGB lighting not workingLoose or incorrect ARGB connection
Incorrect ARGB header (connected to 12V RGB instead of 5V ARGB)
Motherboard ARGB software issue
Fan defect
Check 5V-3Pin ARGB cable connection. Ensure it's connected to a 5V ARGB header, not a 12V RGB header. Update or reinstall motherboard ARGB software. Contact support if issue persists.
Excessive noiseLoose mounting screws
Obstruction in fan blades
Fan defect
Ensure fans are securely mounted. Check for any cables or debris interfering with fan blades. If noise is unusual and persistent, contact support.
Fans not splicing correctlyMisalignment of snap-on mechanism
Debris in splicing mechanism
Ensure fans are perfectly aligned before pushing together. Check for any foreign objects in the splicing connectors.

9. User Tips

  • Cable Management: Take full advantage of the wireless splicing feature to minimize cable clutter in your PC build. Plan your fan layout to group them for easier connection to the single modular cable.
  • ARGB Header Check: Before purchasing or installing, verify that your motherboard has a 5V-3Pin Addressable RGB header. If not, you will need to acquire a separate ARGB controller to manage the lighting effects.
  • Airflow Direction: Pay attention to the arrows on the fan frame indicating airflow direction. Proper airflow is crucial for effective cooling.
  • BIOS/Software Configuration: After installation, enter your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI or use its dedicated software to configure fan speed curves and ARGB lighting to your preference.

10. Warranty and Support

Thermalright TL-M12Q X3 fans come with a 3-year warranty period from the date of purchase. This warranty covers manufacturing defects and issues arising from normal use.

The warranty may be voided if:

  • The product is disassembled or modified without authorization.
  • Damage is caused by improper installation, misuse, or neglect.
  • Damage is caused by external factors such as power surges or natural disasters.

For technical support, warranty claims, or any questions regarding your Thermalright product, please contact the official Thermalright customer support or your retailer. Please have your proof of purchase ready when contacting support.
