1. Introduction
The IEC60695 Materials Glow Hot Wire Ignition Combustion Flammability Resistance Tester is designed to evaluate the fire hazard of materials under fault or overload conditions. This device simulates the thermal stress caused by heat sources such as hot components, overloaded resistance, or ignition sources in a short period. It is primarily used for testing plastic and non-metallic insulating material parts found in electrical and electronic products, components, and household appliances, including switch housings and relay sockets.
This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Glow Hot Wire Tester. Please read it thoroughly before operating the device.

4. Safety Information
WARNING: This equipment operates at high temperatures and involves electrical components. Improper use can lead to severe injury or fire. Always follow safety guidelines.
- Ensure the device is properly grounded before operation.
- Do not operate the device with damaged power cords or if it has been dropped or damaged.
- Keep the test chamber door closed during operation.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including heat-resistant gloves and eye protection.
- Ensure adequate ventilation in the testing area to dissipate fumes.
- Never touch the glow wire or test specimen during or immediately after a test.
- Disconnect power before performing any maintenance or cleaning.
5. Setup
- Unpacking: Carefully remove the tester from its packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage.
- Placement: Place the tester on a stable, level surface in a well-ventilated area, away from flammable materials. Ensure sufficient clearance around the unit for air circulation and access.
- Power Connection: Connect the power cord to a grounded electrical outlet that matches the voltage and frequency requirements specified on the product label.
- Ventilation System: If an external ventilation system is required or recommended, connect it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Initial Inspection: Open the test chamber and ensure the glow wire and sample holder are securely installed and free from obstructions.
6. Operating Instructions
- Power On: Turn on the main power switch, usually located on the control panel. The display should illuminate.
- Parameter Setting: Use the control panel (refer to Figure 2.2) to set the desired test parameters:
- Glow Wire Temperature: Set the target temperature (e.g., 500-1000°C).
- Glowing Time: Set the duration the glow wire will be applied to the specimen (e.g., 0.1-999.9s).
- Burning Time: Set the maximum allowed burning time after glow wire removal (e.g., 0.1-999.9s).
- Flame Chilling Time: Set the maximum allowed flame chilling time (e.g., 0.1-999.9s).
- Specimen Preparation: Prepare the test specimen according to the IEC60695 standard or relevant testing protocol.
- Specimen Loading: Open the test chamber door. Carefully place the specimen into the sample holder, ensuring it is securely positioned and the glow wire can make proper contact. Close the door securely.
- Start Test: Press the 'START' button on the control panel. The glow wire will heat up to the set temperature and then apply pressure to the specimen for the set glowing time.
- Observation: Monitor the test through the viewing window. The device will automatically record burning and flame chilling times.
- Test Completion: Once the test cycle is complete, the glow wire will automatically retract. Wait for the chamber to cool down sufficiently before opening the door.
- Specimen Removal: Carefully open the test chamber door and remove the tested specimen using heat-resistant tools.
- Record Results: Document all test results, including observations and measured times.
7. Maintenance
- Daily Cleaning: After each use, allow the chamber to cool. Wipe down the interior of the test chamber and the sample holder with a clean, dry cloth to remove any residue.
- Glow Wire Inspection: Regularly inspect the glow wire for deformation, corrosion, or damage. Replace if necessary.
- Sample Holder Inspection: Check the sample holder for wear or damage. Ensure it holds specimens securely.
- Ventilation System: Periodically check and clean the ventilation system filters to ensure proper airflow.
- Calibration: It is recommended to have the glow wire temperature and timing mechanisms calibrated by a qualified technician annually to ensure accuracy.
- Storage: When not in use, store the tester in a clean, dry environment.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Tester does not power on | No power supply; Power cord loose; Main switch off | Check power outlet; Secure power cord; Turn on main switch |
| Glow wire not heating | Temperature not set; Glow wire damaged; Internal fault | Set temperature; Inspect/replace glow wire; Contact support |
| Test cycle does not start | Chamber door not closed; Parameters not set; 'START' button not pressed | Ensure door is latched; Set all parameters; Press 'START' firmly |
| Inaccurate temperature readings | Thermoelectric couple dirty/damaged; Calibration needed | Clean/replace thermoelectric couple; Arrange for calibration |
| Specimen not held securely | Sample holder worn; Specimen incorrectly loaded | Inspect/replace sample holder; Re-load specimen correctly |
9. User Tips
- Always ensure the test specimen is completely dry before testing to avoid inconsistent results.
- For repetitive testing, allow sufficient cooling time between tests to maintain stable chamber conditions.
- Keep a logbook of all tests performed, including parameters, results, and any anomalies.
