For Mercury Marine Diagnostic Equipment

1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for using the OBDSTAR ISCAN Marine Diagnostic Tool. It is designed to assist users in understanding the device's features, operation, and maintenance. Please read this manual carefully before operating and maintaining the device, paying special attention to all safety precautions.

The OBDSTAR ISCAN is a new Android-based vehicle trouble diagnostic device developed for Internet applications. It leverages OBDSTAR's advanced diagnosis technology, offering wide vehicle coverage, diverse functions, and accurate test data. Communicating through the OBD connector, this smart mobile terminal facilitates fault diagnosis for marine applications.

Note: Due to IP limitations, the ISCAN For Mercury is not intended for use in the US.

2. Product Overview

2.1 Device Interfaces and Functions

The OBDSTAR ISCAN device features a 5-inch LED capacitive touch screen and various ports for connectivity and power.

2.2 Power Supply

The smart diagnostic scanner can be powered by:

  1. Internal rechargeable battery.
  2. AC/DC power supply (via wall outlet).
  3. Vehicle power (via direct connection to cigarette lighter or other power port).

The internal rechargeable battery supports approximately 4.5 hours of on-screen data viewing when fully charged.

2.3 Test Main Cable

The test main cable is used to establish the connection between the diagnostic scanner and the vehicle being tested.

2.4 Accessories

Accessories may vary with product configuration. The standard package includes:

  • 1pc x Tablet (OBDSTAR ISCAN device)
  • 1pc x M001B Main Cable
  • 1pc x M060 Mercury Cable
  • 1pc x 12V2A Charger

3. Setup

3.1 Powering On

  1. Ensure the built-in battery is fully charged or connected to a DC power supply.
  2. Press and hold the Lock/Power button on the top right of the device for three seconds.
  3. After the startup animation, a Disclaimer window will appear. Scroll to read the Disclaimer thoroughly.
  4. Tap [Accept] to proceed to the DP menu. If [Reject] is selected, the device will go to the Android system homepage.

3.2 Connecting to the Vehicle

Connection methods vary based on vehicle configuration:

Connecting to an OBD II Vehicle:

Only requires the test main cable.

  1. Connect the male connector of the main diagnostic cable to the smart scanner and tighten the captive screw.
  2. Attach the 16-pin connector of the main test cable to the vehicle diagnostic socket.

Connecting to a Non-OBD II Vehicle:

Requires the test main cable and a vehicle-specific adapter.

  1. Connect the male connector of the main diagnostic cable to the smart scanner and tighten the captive screw.
  2. Find a vehicle-specific diagnostic connector and connect its 16-pin female connector to the male connector of the main test cable.
  3. Connect the dedicated diagnostic connector to the vehicle diagnostic socket.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 DP Menu Overview

The DP menu is the main interface for running applications. All operations are performed via the touch screen. Diagnostics are primarily guided by menu selection.

4.2 Screen Locator and Buttons

The navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen provide various functions:

  • Screen Locator: Indicates current screen location (orange). Swipe left/right to navigate pages.
  • Back: Returns to the previous interface or exits the application.
  • Screenshot: Tap and hold to take a screenshot and save it to the gallery.
  • Home: Returns to the main interface of the Android System.
  • Recently Used Apps: Views cascading windows of running apps.
  • Volume & Brightness: Adjusts device volume and screen brightness.
  • DP: Returns to the menu page of DP apps.
  • VCI: Opens setting management interface and checks VCI information.

4.3 Diagnostic Procedure

To perform a diagnostic operation:

  1. Connect the diagnostic scanner to the vehicle via the test main cable.
  2. Register and Log in to your account (if new user).
  3. Download/Upgrade diagnostic software.
  4. Select desired functions and models.
  5. Execute the diagnosis.
  6. Complete diagnostics and exit.

Important: Before exiting or closing the diagnostic application, always exit the diagnostic operation interface and terminate all communication with the vehicle. This prevents potential damage to the vehicle ECU.

4.4 Data Flow Display

The device offers various data flow display modes for easy fault analysis.

4.5 Special Functions

The device supports various special functions, including Device Configuration and Maintenance Notification Setting.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Scanner Care

  • Keep the device and its accessories dry.
  • Avoid strong shocks or vibrations to prevent damage.
  • Do not expose to excessively high or low temperatures.
  • Do not use potent chemicals or strong detergents for cleaning.
  • Do not disassemble the device; this will void the warranty.
  • If the screen is broken, do not touch it and contact customer service immediately.

5.2 Battery and Charger Usage

  • Disconnect the device and unplug the charger when charging is complete.
  • Do not connect metal conductors to the battery.
  • Keep the battery and device away from heating equipment.
  • Use within specified ambient temperature ranges (0°C ~ 40°C for power adapter, -10°C ~ 40°C for battery).
  • Do not disassemble or modify the battery.
  • If battery liquid leaks, avoid contact with skin/eyes and seek medical attention.
  • Do not use a damaged charger cable.
  • Do not dispose of batteries in fire.
  • Dispose of batteries and accessories according to local ordinances.

5.3 Clear Cache

If the device experiences freezing due to insufficient space, you can clear the cache:

  1. Go to [Settings] > [Clear Cache].
  2. Tap [Clear Cache] to free up space. Your user name, password, and favorite information will be retained.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Communication Failure Prompt

If the diagnostic tool cannot establish normal communication, check the following:

  • Ensure the ignition is turned on.
  • Verify the main cable is well connected.
  • Check for faulty vehicle wiring, data cable, or connector.
  • Ensure the battery is not exhausted.
  • Confirm the vehicle is equipped with the selected system.

6.2 Startup Failure

If the device fails to start:

  • Connect the included DC power supply. If the battery is too low, it may take a few minutes to power on.
  • If the device still doesn't power on, contact customer service for repair.
  • Ensure the operating temperature is above -20°C, as the device may not power on below this temperature.

6.3 Remote Assistance (TeamViewer)

For complex issues, OBDSTAR technical staff can provide remote assistance:

  1. Go to [Support] > [TeamViewer] on the device.
  2. Read and accept the EULA, DPA, and Privacy Policy.
  3. Tap [Agree and Continue].
  4. Provide your device's ID to the remote support team.

  • Compatibility Check: Before purchasing or using, verify that the device is compatible with your specific Mercury Marine engine model (e.g., Mercruiser 350 mag mpi, Mercruiser Marine, QSD Diesel).
  • Cable Inclusion: The package includes the M001B Main Cable and M060 Mercury Cable. Ensure these are the correct cables for your application.
  • Regional Restrictions: Be aware that due to IP limitations, the ISCAN For Mercury is not intended for use in the US.
  • Software Updates: Utilize the one-click software upgrade feature via Wi-Fi to keep your device's diagnostic capabilities up-to-date.

9. Warranty and Support

9.1 One-Year Limited Warranty

Shenzhen OBDSTAR Technology Co., Ltd. provides a one-year limited warranty to the original retail buyer from the date of delivery. If the product or any part proves defective under normal use, OBDSTAR will repair or replace it free of charge, depending on the circumstances.

The warranty does not cover damage due to abnormal use, accidents, mishandling, unauthorized alterations, improper installation, exposure to extreme conditions, or use with unapproved accessories. Products with removed, altered, or damaged serial numbers are also not covered.
