4. Setup and Installation
4.1 Mounting
The SPECTER 15A AIO features a mounting hole pattern of 25.5x25.5mm with M2 holes. Use the provided shock-absorbing columns to securely mount the flight controller to your drone frame. Ensure proper orientation as indicated by the arrow on the board, which typically points towards the front of the drone.
4.2 Wiring Diagram
Refer to the detailed wiring diagram below for connecting motors, camera, VTX, GPS, and other peripherals. Pay close attention to power polarity and signal connections to avoid damage to components.
Key Wiring Points:
- Power Input: Connect your 2-4S LiPo battery (7.4V-14.8V) to the VBAT and GND pads. Use the provided XT30U-M power cord.
- Motors: Solder motor wires to the M1-M4 pads according to your motor layout (e.g., Betaflight default).
- Camera: Use the MX1.25-3P camera cable to connect your FPV camera to the designated CAM pads (Video In, 5V, GND).
- Video Transmitter (VTX): Connect your VTX to the appropriate VTX pads (Video Out, 5V, GND).
- Receiver: The board has a built-in SPI ELRS 2.4G receiver. No external receiver wiring is needed for ELRS.
- UARTs: The board features 3 UARTs for connecting peripherals like GPS, external Bluetooth modules, or other serial devices. Refer to the wiring diagram for specific UART pinouts.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Firmware
The flight controller comes pre-flashed with ZEUSF4EVO firmware, and the ESCs are pre-flashed with Q-H-50 (Bluejay) firmware by default. It is recommended to use the latest stable versions of Betaflight Configurator for the flight controller and Bluejay Configurator for the ESCs for optimal performance and access to new features.
- Flight Controller Firmware: Connect the flight controller to your computer via USB. Open Betaflight Configurator, navigate to the 'Firmware Flasher' tab, select 'ZEUSF4EVO' as the board, and flash the desired firmware version.
- ESC Firmware: Connect the flight controller to your computer. In Betaflight Configurator, enable 'ESC Passthrough' on the 'Configuration' tab. Then, open Bluejay Configurator, connect, and update the ESC firmware if necessary.
5.2 Binding the ELRS Receiver
The built-in SPI ELRS 2.4G receiver requires binding to your ELRS transmitter module. Follow these steps:
- Power on your flight controller.
- Connect the flight controller to Betaflight Configurator.
- In the CLI tab, type
bind_rxand press Enter. The receiver LED should start flashing rapidly, indicating it's in bind mode. - On your ELRS transmitter module, initiate the binding process (usually by pressing a bind button or selecting 'Bind' in the Lua script).
- Once bound, the receiver LED on the flight controller should turn solid.
- Verify receiver input in the 'Receiver' tab of Betaflight Configurator.
5.3 Basic Configuration (Betaflight)
After flashing and binding, perform basic configuration in Betaflight Configurator:
- Ports Tab: Configure UARTs for any external peripherals (e.g., GPS, SmartPort).
- Configuration Tab: Set DShot protocol (Dshot300/Dshot600 recommended), accelerometer calibration, and other basic settings.
- Motors Tab: Test motor direction and ensure they spin correctly. Reverse motor direction in BLHeliSuite/Bluejay Configurator if needed.
- Modes Tab: Set up arming, angle, horizon, and other flight modes.
- OSD Tab: Customize your On-Screen Display elements.
6. Maintenance
- Regular Inspection: Periodically check all solder joints for cold joints or cracks, especially after crashes.
- Cleaning: Keep the board free from dust, dirt, and debris. Use compressed air or a soft brush. Avoid using liquids directly on the board.
- Firmware Updates: Keep your flight controller and ESC firmware updated to benefit from bug fixes and performance improvements.
- Physical Damage: Inspect for any physical damage to components or traces. Replace the board if significant damage is found.
7. Troubleshooting
- No Power: Double-check battery connection polarity. Ensure the XT30U-M connector is properly soldered.
- Motors Not Spinning: Verify ESC connections, motor direction in Betaflight/Bluejay, and ensure the flight controller is armed. Check for continuity on motor pads.
- No Receiver Input: Confirm successful ELRS binding. Check the 'Receiver' tab in Betaflight Configurator. Ensure your transmitter is powered on and transmitting.
- Flight Controller Not Connecting to PC: Try a different USB cable. Ensure Betaflight Configurator is up-to-date. Install necessary DFU drivers if prompted.
- Unstable Flight: Recalibrate accelerometer. Check PID settings (start with default PIDs for your frame size). Ensure propellers are balanced and undamaged.
8. User Tips
- Capacitor Installation: Always install the provided low ESR capacitor on your battery lead as close to the flight controller as possible to reduce electrical noise and protect components.
- Solder Quality: Good soldering is crucial for reliable performance. Use appropriate flux and ensure strong, shiny solder joints.
- Heat Shrink: Protect exposed solder pads and connections with heat shrink tubing or liquid electrical tape to prevent short circuits.
